This volume provides a summary description of over three hundred western medieval manuscripts [excluding Greek] acquired by Cambridge University Library since the publication of the mid-nineteenth century printed catalogue; for the most part, no published descriptions have hitherto existed. Concentrating on contents and provenance, the catalogue covers manuscripts from a sixth-century fragment of Augustine to a translation by Erasmus of a work by Plutarch, and in Latin, English, French, Italian, Spanish, and Welsh. The descriptions are complemented with an introductory survey of the collection and its history.

Three generations of scholars contributed their research and memories from their time at the GRU, stretching back to 1974. Their work comprises 18 articles on medieval Jewish History, Hebrew and Arabic manuscripts, archival history, and the story of the Cairo Genizah collections at the University of Cambridge. Together, they demonstrate the achievements of GRU alumni in advancing the field of Genizah Studies for more than five decades. See Less

J.C.T. Oates began work at Cambridge University Library in 1936. During his long, scholarly career he did much to further research at the University Library. In 1954 he published this catalogue of the 15th-century printed books, which were not included in the main library catalogues. The catalogue lists over 4250 items, with detailed information for those not already described in other publications, & gives references to such information where it already existed. The 15th-century material is listed by place of publication, & is indexed by author, title if anonymous, printer, & former owners & autographs. Although modern catalogues of incunabula are now available online, Oates' catalogue is the only one allowing readers to locate items held by the Library from the earliest days of printing, & is still an important tool for researchers.
