Loadings and materials used for design of cable-stayed bridges are discussed. The effects of highway and railroad loadings and their special considerations, seismic effects, and dynamic wind load effects are thoroughly presented and guidelines for design given. A chapter on stability of cable-stayed bridges, as well as cable materials, their testing, strength, fatigue strength, and behavior of anchorages is included.

Even among legendary engineers, the Roebling family stands out. The brilliant and irascible patriarch John A. Roebling achieved renown as a canal engineer, bridge designer, and innovator of wire rope—a technology that makes possible modern suspension bridges, high-rise elevators, construction cranes, and cable cars. All four of John's sons inherited the family business, but only the eldest—the reserved, thoughtful Washington—staked an independent claim to fame, most notably for his work on the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. Between 1893 and 1907, Washington Roebling wrote about his father's life, character, career, and achievements with candor and intimate family details. Part biography, part memoir, Washington Roebling's Father makes available for the first time the text of this remarkable manuscript. Donald Sayenga, an internationally recognized authority on the history of wire rope, has painstakingly transcribed theoriginal manuscript and tracked down annotations for hundreds ofpeople, places, events, and technologies. Washington Roebling's Father: A Memoir of John A. Roebling is both an accurate and complete biography of John and a frank narrative of Washington 's memories and inner life. As a rare glimpse into the genius and failings of two towering figures, this book is a must-read for civil engineers, bridge enthusiasts, and industrial historians. Other Editions This book is also available in a German edition at the publisher's online bookstore.

Research Transformed Into Practice presents the technical developments and innovations that have resulted in a successful transfer of research supported by the National Science Foundation into the practice of engineering and construction. More than 60 papers summarize research work, scholarly findings, and practical applications emanating from past and current projects in areas such as structures, structural mechanics, geomechanics, geotechnical and structural systems, and construction materials. Chapters detail new and/or improved products; materials; methods of construction, analysis, and design; and computer software. Other chapters describe new or revised standards and codes. Topics include: engineering infrastructures; composites, structural systems, and connections; instrumentation; software; masonry; bridges; seismic issues; and analysis and design concrete. Specific papers cover such topics as random vibration analysis; injection grouting for repair of masonry; aerodynamic design of cable-supported bridges; seismic rehabilitation of older steel buildings. The papers in this collection were originally presented at a meeting sponsored by the National Science Foundation, held in Crystal City, Virginia, June 14-16, 1995.
