John McAndrew's Modernist Vision tells the compelling story of the architect, scholar, and curator John McAndrew, who played a key role in redefiningmodernism in the United States from the 1930s onward. The designer of the VassarCollege Art Library---arguably the first modern interior on a college campus---andthe curator of architecture at the Museum of Modern Art in New York from 1937to 1941, McAndrew was instrumental in creating a distinct and innovative aestheticthat bridged the European modernist lineage and American regional vernacular. Providing a fascinating glimpse into McAndrew's life, his associations withimportant architects and artists, and the historical context that shaped his work, this book is a thoroughly researched testament to a man who left a powerful markon the evolution of American architecture.

"Thinking Contemporary Curating is the first book to offer an in-depth analysis of the volatile territory of international curatorial practice and the thinking--or insight--that underpins it. In five essays, renowned art historian and critic Terry Smith describes how today curators take on roles far beyond exhibition making, to include reimagining museums; writing the history of curating; creating discursive platforms and undertaking social or political activism, as well as rethinking spectatorship. The catalyst for the publication was 'The Now Museum' conference that ICI produced in collaboration with the CUNY Graduate Center and the New Museum in New York in 2011. In panel discussions and lectures over 30 leading artists, art historians, curators, and museum directors, such as art historian Claire Bishop, Okwui Enwezor (Director, Haus der Kunst), Massimiliano Gioni (Associate Director and Director of Exhibitions, New Museum), Lu Jie (Director, Long March), Maria Lind (Director, Tensta Konsthall) and Terry Smith discussed the diversification of the notion of the 'museum of contemporary art, ' providing intergenerational perspectives on recent developments across Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. This spurred a year-long journey for Smith, responding to ideas, events, and encounters in the artworld in the process of questioning what 'curating' is today, which forms the heart of this publication."-- Publisher's description.

The book, which Germano Celant had been working on for years, is published posthumously and represents the professional and spiritual testament of the curator, known and respected internationally. The volume tells the logics of exhibiting that characterized Celant's work (Genoa, 1940 - Milan, 2020), presenting, in chronological order, a selection of 34 exhibitions [...]. The volume was intended to retrace the exhibitions both on an ideational and a visual level, through over 300 pictures of the actual displays and the critical texts that were published in the respective catalogues. Thus emerges the evolution in Celant's curatorial practice, from personal interpretation to his focus on historical documents, with an eye always turned towards non-traditional media (book, record, photography) and towards the encroachments between different languages (art , architecture, design).

Résumé éditeur : "Current art world statistics demonstrate that the fight for gender and race equality in the art world is far from over: only sixteen percent of this year's Venice Biennale artists were female; only fourteen percent of the work displayed at MoMA in 2016 was by nonwhite artists; only a third of artists represented by U.S. galleries are female, but over two-thirds of students enrolled in art and art-history programs are young women. Arranged in thematic sections focusing on feminism, race, and sexuality, Curatorial Activism examines and illustrates pioneering examples of exhibitions that have broken down boundaries and demonstrated that new approaches are possible, from Linda Nochlin's "Women Artists" at LACMA in the mid-1970s to Jean-Hubert Martin's "Carambolages" in 2016 at the Grand Palais in Paris. Profiles key exhibitions by pioneering curators including Okwui Enwezor, Linda Nochlin, Jean-Hubert Martin and Nan Goldin, with a foreword by Lucy Lippard, internationally known art critic, activist and curator, and early champion of feminist art, this volume is both an invaluable source of practical information for those who understand that institutions must be a driving force in this area and a vital source of inspiration for today's expanding new generation of curators."
