The enviBUILD conferences are organized annually by one of the Central European universities. They are building on the legacy of the Buildings and Environment Conferences held by the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Slovak Technical University. Since 2012 they have been carried out under the “enviBUILD” brand name. An overview of all previous conferences can be found at “www.cab.sk/pastevents.html”. The enviBUILD conferences seek to map the current situation in the field of sustainable construction in the Central European region. The fourteenth sequel organized 2019 in Bratislava, as a one-day event, focused on building physics and applied technology in architecture, building construction and environmental engineering, with the following themes and topics: Indoor Environment and its Hygienic Aspects Sustainable Buildings and Environmental Assessment Building Materials and Components Energy Performance of Buildings Hygrothermal Performance of Buildings Responsive and Adaptive Building Envelopes Ventilation of Buildings Daylighting Building Acoustic Energy and Indoor Environmental Simulation Of the seventy abstracts submitted, some fifty valuable scientific articles were produced, most of which were presented directly at the conference. The contributions came from eight countries and more than a dozen academic institutions. All published papers were peer-reviewed by at least two independent professionals. In this way they provide a relatively comprehensive overview of the research and development in the field of sustainable construction, especially in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, enriched with inspirations from Austria, France, Hungary and Ukraine.

The monograph presents the complex analysis and evaluation of the changes of the social-spatial genotype of the large Lithuanian cities (Kaunas, Klaipėda and Vilnius) determined by the modernist urbanization of the Soviet era using the interdisciplinary theory of networks and mathematical network models as the main methodological tools. The idea behind the monograph is the following: the modernistic urbanism not only introduced the new spatial configurations in specific location of a city with a specific social scenario of public space usage, but essentially affected how city is functioning as a whole. Soviet transformations of three Lithuanian cities from 1939 till 2016 are used as a good example of above mentioned revolutionary processes. We grasp and transform the world through interplays of quantification and qualification. The cross pollination of geometric and literary figures is deeply embedded in our cognitive habits, instruments of inquiry and the constructed environment. Through time, thought has reflected on the visible processes and products of material craft to explain and train the invisible workings of the mind. Recursively, material craft embodies a tradition of splitting ideas into categorical parts and compositional units for reassembly. Although the mathematical and verbal arts are often placed in contrast, human inventions manifest a weave of alphanumerics. Mythic parables, geometric proofs, memory arts, poems, algorithms, buildings and cities emerge from the intercourse of measure and explication. This special issue of the Nexus Network Journal considers architectonic examples of past, present and potential geometries of rhetoric.

"This book draws attention to the simple but elusive architectural space of public and farmers markets. It discusses three seminal types of markets--heritage building, open-air pavilion, and pop-up canopy-- demonstrating the characteristics of each type using a mixture of narrative and illustration. The narrative combines historically informed architectural observation with interview material drawn from conversations the author has had over the years with market managers, vendors, and shoppers. The illustrations include an appealing variety of photos, diagrams, and drawings that enabled the author to view each market through an architectural lens based on eight scales of measure--the hand, the container, the person, the stall, a grouping of stalls, the street, the block, and the market's situation within the neighborhood. Some of the architectural elements discussed include walls that layer, openings that frame, roofs that encompass, and niches that embrace. While each of the case studies illustrates shared characteristics of one of the architectural typologies, each farmers market is distinct in the specific ways it reflects the local culture and environment. Ultimately, in viewing markets through these three types and eight scales of measure we are able to better appreciate how farmers markets foster social interaction and community engagement"--
