Abstract

Recent major advances in our understanding of basic immunology have led to the development of powerful new adjuvants-substances that can stimulate the innate immune system and significantly improve the effectiveness of antigen-based vaccines. In Vaccine Adjuvants: Immunological and Clinical Principles, highly respected clinical immunologists and vaccine researchers detail the major research areas in this new era of adjuvant discovery, design, development, and use. The authors lay down a rational basis for vaccine adjuvant function and analyze a number of significantly distinct adjuvant-active molecules to illuminate the principles of their function and use. The focus is on specific receptor-ligand interactions, including the molecular features needed for a compound to possess adjuvant activity. The critical interface zone between the innate and adaptive immune systems is also analyzed to show how adjuvants exert their effects on T- and B-cell activation. Additional chapters address the possibility of tailoring adjuvants to yield optimally safe and effective responses. Among the highlights are an explanation of innate immune signaling-including Toll-like receptors-in vaccination, and a preview of emerging technologies in adjuvant research, such as microparticles and novel lipid and carbohydrate adjuvants. Authoritative and eminently practical, Vaccine Adjuvants: Immunological and Clinical Principles moves from the basic principles of the innate immune system, through the characteristics of specific adjuvants, to detailed methods for developing the safer and more effective adjuvants that will trigger these powerful immune responses, and finally to the combinations of immune responses needed for successful vaccination.

Abstract

In the past, ketamine was considered a dangerous medication with the potential for abuse as a recreational drug. Healthcare providers were warned of its dangers and taught to fear its use. With this book, we hope to eliminate any fear and misgivings associated with this drug. It can be a useful medication in many situations, some of which we describe herein. This book discusses the use of ketamine in anesthesia, pain disorders, depression, palliative care, and trauma situations. It also examines ketamine usage in developing countries.

Abstract

This book provides an in-depth insight and overview of a number of most promising immunopotentiators in modern vaccines. In contrast to existing books on the subject it provides recent data on the critical mechanisms governing the activity of vaccine adjuvants and delivery systems. Knowledge of immunological pathways and scenarios of the cells and molecules involved is described and depicted in comprehensive illustrations.* Contributions from leading international authorities in the field* Well-illustrated, informative figures present the interactions between immunopotentiators and

Abstract

Offering focused, practical, and up-to-date content on immunotherapies used to treat a wide variety of cancer types, Clinical Immuno-Oncology covers the basic cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in cancer initiation and progression. The text reviews the development of tumor specific antigens and the challenges of developing cancer immunotherapies. Every effort is made to relate the fundamental aspects of host immunity to the efficacy of current immunotherapies and how they work in conjunction with the immune system to combat cancer. This foundational resource explains the basics of cancer immunotherapy, discusses best practices, and provides recommendations from experienced clinicians in the field. Dr. John E. Niederhuber and a team of expert contributing authors provide clinically focused information essential for integrating these new therapies into practice--making this an ideal resource for fellows, practitioners, and other cancer team members in medical oncology, radiation oncology, cancer surgery, immunology, and cancer research.
