The artist novel occupies a prominent place in literary history. Although research into this genre, which is usually perceived as especially rigid, may seem to be exhausted at a first glance, a closer look at the development of the artist novel reveals its sheer incomparable malleability and resilience. In this book Orla Flock turnes her attention to those types of artist novels, which she calls dual artist novels, which depict the artistic and personal development of both a male and a female artist. The juxtaposition of the male and the female artist narratives reveals both the rootedness of the genre in literary tradition and subverts established but outdated notions of genre and gender. On both a structural and a narrative level, the dual artist novel challenges established but confining views and demonstrates that even incremental, nuanced development over time can ultimately lead to vast transformation. By reshaping the formerly rigid genre of the artist novel to include numerous and diverse voices while staying true to the thematic tradition, the dual artist novel subverts both the notion of static genre definitions as well as limiting conceptions of gender. About the author Orla Flock graduated from the University of Konstanz with a PhD in American Literature in 2022.

This study of the poetics of the Romantic K nstlerinroman (female artist novel) brings to the foreground its salient metafictional discourse on the aesthetics of the sublime, ever since its beginnings in Madame de Sta l's "Corinne ou L'Italie". The book presents detailed readings of H.D.'s "Palimpsest", Christa Wolf's "Nachdenken ber Christa T." and Marguerite Duras' "L'Amant" in a dialogue with Kant, Freud, Lacan, Cixous, Derrida and other philosophers, theorists, literary critics and writers. Each novel is explored in terms of its generic affiliations, its reflections on the role of literature and the writer in society and its aesthetic discourse on the sublime. The book stages an inquiry into the relation between genre, the sublime, gender and literary history from which emerge insights into the conditions of subjectivity underlying the experience and communication of the sublime.

This study addresses the question of artistic identity and the myth of the artist as it has been shaped by the artists themselves. While the term artist is to be understood in a broad sense, the focus of this study is the literature of the Romantic tradition. Identity is largely perceived as a construct, and a central hypothesis of this book concerns its aesthetic value and the ways it creates dominant narratives of self-perception that produce powerful myths. The construction of the artist's identity, be it collective or personal, rests on a series of aesthetic praxes. Caught between the mythic idealisation of poetic genius and its social devaluation, the Romantic artist seeks to create a place for himself, and in doing so, he engages in his own mythmaking. This process is studied in an interdisciplinary perspective, approaching texts and writers from different traditions. The study analyses various typologies of the artist, numerous mythmaking strategies as well as several postural techniques; all of which have sketched major direct or indirect fictional self-portraits in the European tradition.

Meuthen's study of the traditions operative in the German Künstlerroman is post-structuralist in its approach and as such advances a counter-concept to the traditional schematic inclusion of this genre in that of the Bildungsroman. It opens up an 'inverse' perspective in which central works of German prose literature are seen as cryptograms of a sophistic counter-movement to the main idealistic currents of European cultural history asserting themselves in the 19th century and thus establishing the 'modernist' perspective. The spectrum of works analyzed ranges from Heinse's »Ardinghello« through central classical and Romantic works, Rilke's »Malte Laurids Brigge« and Thomas Mann's »Doktor Faustus« to Thomas Bernhard's »Untergeher« and Ransmayr's »Letzte Welt«.
