On July 19, 1048, the Yellow River breached its banks, drastically changing its course across the Hebei Plain and turning it into a delta where the river sought a path out to the ocean. This dramatic shift of forces in the natural world resulted from political deliberation and hydraulic engineering of the imperial state of the Northern Song Dynasty. It created 80 years of social suffering, economic downturn, political upheaval, and environmental changes, which reshaped the medieval North China Plain and challenged the state. Ling Zhang deftly applies textual analysis, theoretical provocation, and modern scientific data in her gripping analysis of how these momentous events altered China's physical and political landscapes and how its human communities adapted and survived. In so doing, she opens up an exciting new field of research by wedding environmental, political, economic, and social history in her examination of one of North China's most significant environmental changes.

Global change induced extreme climate events are becoming more common than ever. Soil carbon and nitrogen pools correlated significantly with changes in atmospheric greenhouse gas. Large increase in atmospheric greenhouse gases, majorly carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane, can enhance the heating of atmosphere, which will be generally followed by global warming. Mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions including various strategies, such as the sequestrations of carbon and nitrogen in soil, plant or ecosystems, efficient management of agricultural and forestry ecosystems, mitigation of ecosystem carbon and nitrogen leaching, etc. The mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions from all kinds of sources will be therefore crucial in mitigation of global climate change. This reprint gathered latest case studies and methodologies, including, but not limited to measurement and mitigation strategies of carbon and nitrogen pools in soil, plant, or ecosystems, and greenhouse gas emissions, will substantially improve our understanding of the potential, ability, and capacity of ecosystems in mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions and hence global climate change. This reprint can be used by colleagues working on global climate change, ecology, agriculture, forestry and policy makers associated with global change. Chapters included in this reprint were contributed by colleagues from China, Egypt, Italy, Jordan, Mexico, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, etc. It can be used in most countries in the world.

This book highlights processes, impacts and management practices of bamboo expansion occurring in areas where it is distributed around the world. Although not conceptually plant invasions, bamboo expansion has been considered an “invasion” based on its characteristics and the impacts it caused on adjacent ecosystems it expanded into, including altered element cycling, transformed soil microbial community compositions, decreased biodiversity, fluctuated primary productions, etc. However, the processes and impacts during or after complete expansion and the underlying mechanisms of successful expansion, are still unclear. The ecological effects of bamboo expansion are not given full consideration and are not thoroughly understood. Based on the latest studies, this book synthesizes research progress of bamboo expansion effects on the soil abiotic environment, soil microbial community compositions, plant characteristics, ecosystem biodiversity, element cycling process, and ecological effects of primary management practice, etc. This book will provide a thorough understanding of ecological changes following bamboo expansions, benefit the effective control of expanding bamboo with respect to decreased biodiversity and mitigation of global change, and accurate prediction and evaluation of bamboo expansion impacts currently and in the future occur around the world. This book presents critical points that need further investigation based on the latest findings, which will be helpful for ecological researchers, policymakers, forestry workers, or graduate and PhD students. .

Advances in forest management will enhance the sustainable development of human society, and should be focused on. Under the context of global change, soil nutrients, especially nitrogen, should be carefully managed and monitored in plantations experiencing intensive nitrogen input, and forests with exotic plant invasion disturbance, considering its substantial contribution to global nitrous oxide. One negative effect of global change could be loss of biodiversity, which could be maintained by forest management. In addition, advanced technologies should also be developed to prevent fire in forests considering its increased frequency. Importantly, policies and technologies should also be developed for advanced forest management, such as deep learning in plant disease prevention, and quantitative strategic planning matrix in management of forest conservation.

In the current digital era with the exponential growth of medical knowledge, voluminous textbooks have gradually been replaced by the pocketbooks with tables, figures, images, and e-links to digital book versions with supplemental materials available online. The advent of novel next-generation sequencing (NGS) and multi-omics single cell methods have uncovered causative molecular mechanisms in most of the known non-neoplastic hematologic disorders. There is an urgent need for a concise and up-to-date handbook focused on non-malignant hematology. The book describes characteristic clinical features and state-of-the-art diagnostic approaches of non-neoplastic hematologic disorders. It introduces modern molecular biomarkers with enormous diagnostic and prognostic value and novel targeted gene therapy. Differential diagnosis also includes relevant hematologic malignancies that could represent diagnostic pitfalls. Chapters include take home points for each disorder in concise and easy memorable manner. The book also provides diagnostic algorithms, novel prognostic and predictive factors, up-to-date treatment options, clinically relevant molecular signatures, and ongoing promising clinical trials if available. There are more than 100 questions and answers with comments on laboratory values, updated cytogenetic and mutational profiles. Non-Neoplastic Hematologic Disorders: A Quick Review of Modern Diagnostic and Therapeutic Approaches provides concise clinical and laboratory information about most common non-neoplastic hematologic disorder for practicing hematologists, oncologists, hematopathologists, molecular pathologists, internal medicine specialists, pediatricians, research nurses, nurse practitioners, and trainees at all levels.

This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of the pathologic features of common benign and malignant hematopoietic disorders in spleen and liver for practicing pathologists, hematopathologists and clinicians. The authors are from large academic centers, affiliated teaching hospitals and central referral clinics and are experienced in the diagnosis of hematopoietic disorders in the spleen and liver. The book consists of 21 chapters, with the first three chapters devoted to normal histologic features, conventional, cytogenetic and molecular studies necessary for the diagnosis of hematopoietic disorders in the spleen and liver. Chapters 4 to 17 cover the primary and secondary mature B- and T/NK cell lymphomas, Hodgkin lymphoma, B and T cell lymphoblastic leukemias, myeloid neoplasms, histiocytic and dendritic neoplasms, and post-transplant disorders including post transplant lymphoproliferative disorders. Chapters 19 to 21 encompass red blood cell disorders, other benign hematologic disorders and infectious/inflammatory disorders that could mimic hematopoietic neoplasms. These chapters are formatted on specific hematopoietic neoplasms to comprise epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, morphology, immunophenotyping, molecular genetics, prognosis and brief treatment guidelines. Diagnostic caveats are included in order to have a quick review of the key points in each chapter. Diagnostic Pathology of Hematopoietic Disorders of Spleen and Liver covers most, if not all of the benign and malignant hematopoietic disorders in the spleen and liver and serves as a practical and useful resource for general pathologists and hematopathologists.
