Abstract

Critic, poet and essayist Friedrich von Schlegel (1772-1829) was a leading figure of German Romanticism. Believed to be autobiographical, his unfinished novel Lucinde caused a scandal in 1799 because of its portrayal of a sexual liaison. After exploring the development of philosophy, Schlegel increasingly turned his attention to the study of Sanskrit and Hindu religious writings. This work on the connections between Sanskrit and Indo-European languages, first published in German in 1808, is regarded as an important early contribution to comparative grammar - it was Schlegel himself who introduced this term into linguistics. He was inspired by the example of comparative anatomy, and he also promoted the idea of family trees for languages. The Aesthetic and Miscellaneous Works of Frederick von Schlegel (1849), in English translation, is also reissued in this series.

Abstract

Critic, poet and philosopher Friedrich von Schlegel (1772-1829) was a leading figure of German Romanticism. In the two years before his untimely death, he wrote three cycles of lectures intended as part of a larger project to lay the foundations of a new general philosophy. Two of these cycles, 'Philosophie des Lebens' (given in 1827, published 1828) and 'Philosophie des Sprache und des Wortes' (given in December 1828 and published posthumously), are reissued here in an 1847 English translation. The first presents Schlegel's understanding of philosophy as independent of theology or politics, concerned with the 'inner spiritual life' of humankind. The second explores the nature of communication through language and art. Schlegel argues that full human consciousness cannot be restored by Enlightenment science, but only by divine revelation and redemption. He offers no ready-made solutions, but encourages his listeners to develop their own responses to these questions.

Abstract

Critic, poet and essayist Friedrich von Schlegel (1772-1829) was a leading figure of German Romanticism. This 1849 collection of his shorter works in English translation contains his key insights into literary criticism and art theory. While his early writings had championed classical forms and rejected modern styles, he went on to develop distinctly Romantic aesthetics and ethics. His 1794 treatise 'On the Limits of the Beautiful' demonstrates this philosophical transition in its effort to harmonise the elements of beauty: 'the richness of nature, the purity of love, and the symmetry of art'. Schlegel's other writings here apply his developing Romantic aesthetic to Christian art, Gothic architecture, and medieval poetry. The collection also includes the English translation of his seminal work on comparative grammar, Ueber die Sprache und Weisheit der Indier (1808), which is also reissued in this series in the original German.

Abstract

Publié en 1797, ce manifeste du romantisme allemand inaugure une idée de la poésie en rupture avec le classicisme. Il offre une étude sur la poésie moderne de son temps et sur la valeur universelle de l'héritage des anciens grecs.--[Memento]
