From the beginning of their careers and forever after, scientists are called upon to do various kinds of writing and speaking. Communication skills are among the qualities most prized by those who hire and promote scientists. Scientific Papers and Presentations provides a concise guide to writing what must be written: proposals, literature reviews, theses, journal articles, slide presentations, posters, or grants. The author also discusses conventions in writing, proofreading, copywriting, as well as methods for searching and citing scientific literature, composing reviews, preparing data presentations, communicating visually, and public speaking. No other reference provides guidelines and practical advice for so many forms of communication. Advice-laden appendices include actual examples of papers annotated by the author. Based on the author's fifteen years of experience advising young scientists about scientific writing, the book can be used as a course text for scientific writing, seminar, or scientific presentation courses. It is also a handy and valuable reference for fledgling scientists. The American (1877) was written the very year Henry James committed himself to making his way as an author outside America. It thus formed part of the brief that James had to draw up both for and against his countrymen. This 1987 collection of essays casts light on this and other major aspects of the novel: the French literary influences on James as he gravitated between the genres of the romantic and the realistic novel; the many-layered French political scene that he incorporated into the novel; the complex gender roles of his characters; and the pervasive effect of capitalism upon them.

Originating at an international forum held at the University of Vic (Spain), the twelve essays collected here attest to important changes in translation practice and the assumptions which underpin them. Leading theorists respond to the state of Translation Studies today, particularly the epistemological dilemma between theories that are empirically oriented and those that are inspired by developments in Cultural Studies. But the volume is also practical. Experienced instructors survey existing pedagogies at translator/interpreter training programs and explore new techniques that address the technological and global challenges of the new millennium. Among the topics considered are: how to use translation technology in the classroom, how to construct a syllabus for a course in audiovisual translating or in translation theory, and how to develop guidelines for a program for community interpreters or conference interpreters. The contributors all assume that translation, whether written or oral, does not occupy a neutral space. It is a cross-cultural exchange that produces far-reaching social effects. Their essays significantly advance the theoretical and practical understanding of translation along these lines.

Study of the Gospel according to Philip, an important gnostic Christian text, has been hampered by unresolved questions about the unity, genre, and sectarian contexts of the work. This book argues that terms of self-designation, use of controversial vocabulary, style, hermeneutic strategies, and theological commitments together present persuasive evidence of derivation from multiple sectarian milieux. The document's organizing principles are found to be in accord with the excerpting and collection practices of Late Antiquity. The coherence of the text lies in its compiler's distinctive interests and choices, not in the uniformity of its materials. The persuasive case made by this book will help to advance research on this significant document of early Christianity.
