Abstract

Big Earth Data in Support of the Sustainable Development Goals 2019 presents 27 case studies of “Big Earth Data Science Engineering Program” (CASEarth) on the development of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) indicators and sustainability assessments in six SDGs, including: SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life below Water), and SDG 15 (Life on Land). These cases provide in-depth, systematic research and evaluation results on the selected SDGs and indicators by means of data, method models, and decision support at global, regional, national and local scales. The 27 case studies covered 20 indicators, with focus varying from constructing databases, building index systems, and evaluating indicator progress. Each case study first clearly lists the corresponding SDG targets and indicators it addresses, and then proceeds with the research methods, data, analysis results, and prospects for future research. It can be seen that Big Earth Data as a new scientific methodology has started demonstrating its great value and potential for applications in monitoring and evaluating SDGs for China and developing countries around the world. The report concludes with a summary of the major progress in Big Earth Data for SDGs and future research priorities.

Abstract

Atlas of Remote Sensing for World Heritage: China describes the UNESCO Natural and Cultural Heritage Sites in China and focuses on the interrelationship between culture and nature as well as on the breadth and complexity of China's world heritage sites. It emphasizes the application of space technology to world heritage, offering a vivid portrayal of China's forty world heritage sites and their surrounding environments by using multi-band, multi-resolution, multi-temporal spaceborne and airborne remote sensing data and 3D models. The book is a valuable resource for researchers in fields related to world heritage and to anyone with an appreciation of natural beauty and cultural landmarks. Professor Guo Huadong is the Director-General of the Center for Earth Observation and Digital Earth, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, China.

Abstract

This book presents the basic principles and the latest advances in space archaeology. Following general reviews of the state of the art of Earth observation technologies and archaeology, the book introduces the principles and methods of space archaeology, remote sensing methods for archaeological survey, and integrated archaeological survey methods including geophysics, virtual reality, web technologies, global positioning systems (GPS), geographical information systems (GIS), and big data. The book then presents two chapters on case studies of word heritage sites in Asia, Europe, Africa, and Americas, including three major world heritage sites in China: The Great Wall, Grand Canal, and Silk Road. The last chapter of the book discusses the future of space archaeology. This book has an interdisciplinary appeal and scholars with an interest in cultural heritage and remote sensing technologies for Earth value its contribution.

Abstract

On May 12, 2008, Wenchuan County in Sichuan suffered an earthquake of 8.0 on the Richter Scale. Applying the remote sensing technology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences launched into action, making use of its facilities, remote sensing planes, and satellites to amass optical and radar data. This title presents a pictorial summation of this project.

Abstract

This open access book showcases the innovative practices of Big Earth Data methods through a collection of comprehensive case studies from China to monitor and evaluate indicators for seven SDGs, i.e., zero hunger (SDG 2), clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), affordable and clean energy (SDG 7), sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11), climate action (SDG 13), life below water (SDG 14), life on land (SDG 15), and to analyze the interactions among multiple SDGs indicators. The emphasis on Big Earth Data is highly relevant within the context of growing global challenges. Disaster risk mitigation, climate change, global food security, resource management, and environmental challenges all are interlinked through earth systems and processes that are independent of human constructs. Therefore, these case studies highlight methods and practices of spatial information mining and integrated SDG evaluation, which include evaluating the synergy and trade-off relationships among the SDGs in the context of their correlations; simulating multiple indicators’ interactions in future environmental, economic and social scenarios in the context of their temporal variations; designing integrated evaluations of regional SDGs in the context of experience with the study of multiple indicators. Big Earth Data therefore has the potential to support informed policy and decision support at global, regional, and local scales.

Abstract

Global change involves complex and far-reaching variations in the Earth’s systems, and satellite observations have been widely used in global change studies. Over the past five decades, Earth observation has developed into a comprehensive system that can conduct dynamic monitoring of the land, the oceans and the atmosphere at the local, regional and even global scale. At the same time, although a large number of Earth observation satellites have been launched, very few of them are used in global change studies. The lack of scientific satellite programs greatly hinders research on global change. This book proposes using a series of global change scientific satellites to establish a scientific observation grid for global environmental change monitoring from space, and offers the first comprehensive review of lunar-based Earth observation. These scientific satellites could provide not only basic datasets but also scientific support in facilitating advances in international global change research.

Abstract

This open access book offers a summary of the development of Digital Earth over the past twenty years. By reviewing the initial vision of Digital Earth, the evolution of that vision, the relevant key technologies, and the role of Digital Earth in helping people respond to global challenges, this publication reveals how and why Digital Earth is becoming vital for acquiring, processing, analysing and mining the rapidly growing volume of global data sets about the Earth. The main aspects of Digital Earth covered here include: Digital Earth platforms, remote sensing and navigation satellites, processing and visualizing geospatial information, geospatial information infrastructures, big data and cloud computing, transformation and zooming, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, and social media. Moreover, the book covers in detail the multi-layered/multi-faceted roles of Digital Earth in response to sustainable development goals, climate changes, and mitigating disasters, the applications of Digital Earth (such as digital city and digital heritage), the citizen science in support of Digital Earth, the economic value of Digital Earth, and so on. This book also reviews the regional and national development of Digital Earth around the world, and discusses the role and effect of education and ethics. Lastly, it concludes with a summary of the challenges and forecasts the future trends of Digital Earth. By sharing case studies and a broad range of general and scientific insights into the science and technology of Digital Earth, this book offers an essential introduction for an ever-growing international audience.
