Abstract

"This timely book offers an in-depth exploration of state partitions and the history of nationalism in Europe from the Enlightenment onwards. Stefano Bianchini compares traditional national democratic development to the growing transnational demands of representation with a focus on transnational mobility and empathy versus national localism against the EU project. In an era of multilevel identity, global economic and asylum seeker crises, nationalism is becoming more liquid which in turn strengthens the attractiveness of 'ethnic purity' and partitions, affects state stability, and influences the nature of democracy in Europe. The result may be exposure to the risk of new wars, rather than enhanced guarantees of peace." -- rear cover.

Abstract

The authors consider the original strategy proposed by Sudakov for solving the Monge transportation problem with norm cost |cdot|_{D^*} min igg{ int |mathtt T(x) - x|_{D^*} dmu(x), mathtt T : mathbb{R}^d o mathbb{R}^d, u = mathtt T_# mu igg}, with mu, u probability measures in mathbb{R}^d and mu absolutely continuous w.r.t. mathcal{L}^d. The key idea in this approach is to decompose (via disintegration of measures) the Kantorovich optimal transportation problem into a family of transportation problems in Z_alphaimes mathbb{R}^d, where {Z_alpha}_{alphainmathfrak{A}} subset mathbb{R}^d are disjoint regions such that the construction of an optimal map mathtt T_alpha : Z_alpha o mathbb{R}^d is simpler than in the original problem, and then to obtain mathtt T by piecing together the maps mathtt T_alpha. When the norm |{cdot}|_{D^*} is strictly convex, the sets Z_alpha are a family of 1-dimensional segments determined by the Kantorovich potential called optimal rays, while the existence of the map mathtt T_alpha is straightforward provided one can show that the disintegration of mathcal L^d (and thus of mu) on such segments is absolutely continuous w.r.t. the 1-dimensional Hausdorff measure. When the norm |{cdot}|_{D^*} is not strictly convex, the main problems in this kind of approach are two: first, to identify a suitable family of regions {Z_alpha}_{alphainmathfrak{A}} on which the transport problem decomposes into simpler ones, and then to prove the existence of optimal maps. In this paper the authors show how these difficulties can be overcome, and that the original idea of Sudakov can be successfully implemented. The results yield a complete characterization of the Kantorovich optimal transportation problem, whose straightforward corollary is the solution of the Monge problem in each set Z_alpha and then in mathbb{R}^d. The strategy is sufficiently powerful to be applied to other optimal transportation problems.

Abstract

This book offers theoretical and empirical contributions on the approaches, policies, practices concerning the inclusion of migrants through social entrepreneurship. Grounded in a multi-disciplinary approach and with a special focus on the Adriatic-Ionian region, the book offers a debate on the antecedents, processes and outcomes of social entrepreneurship and migrants’ inclusion, describing some innovative initiatives and their potential transferability in other contexts. The Adriatic-Ionian macro-region represents an interesting yet overlooked area of research, characterized by evolving migration and inclusion policies, together with specific legislation and reforms for social entrepreneurship. The migration dynamics along the so-called Balkan Route confer to this macro-region strong political relevance in the field of security and migration management. Contributing to the targets of SDG 8, the book contextualizes the opportunities offered by social entrepreneurship as a form of decent work for migrants, and of potential growth driver for local and international territories. Stefano Bianchini, Full Professor of East European Politics and History, University of Bologna. He was Rector's delegate for relations with Eastern Europe from 2015 to 2021. As an expert of Balkan issues, particularly on Yugoslavia and its successor states, he published 9 books, 29 edited books and more than 100 articles. Federica Bandini, Associate Professor of Social Enterprises Management and Accounting at the University of Bologna and Fellow Senior Professor at Bocconi School of Management. She earned an ITP at London Business School, and a Ph.D. in Management for public and nonprofit organizations. She has been the Director of leading university programs on management of social enterprises and NGOs. Daniela Bolzani, Associate Professor in Management at the University of Bologna. She has extensive research and teaching expertise in the domain of migrant, social, and academic entrepreneurship. Before starting her academic career, she worked for around five years as a professional in the fields of financial audit and international development in Europe and Africa.
