L'expression « concilier vie familiale et vie professionnelle » est entrée dans le langage courant de l'action politique sous l'impulsion des institutions européennes et d'organisations internationales comme l'OCDE. Parce qu'elle met en jeu à la fois des pratiques individuelles et familiales, des milieux professionnels et des politiques publiques, la conciliation vie familiale-vie professionnelle est un objet difficile à construire pour les sciences sociales. Les éditeurs de cet ouvrage se sont donc employés à rapprocher des chercheurs de disciplines ou de spécialités d'ordinaire éloignées, et à nourrir le débat sociopolitique français des apports de la recherche internationale. Le résultat est dans le triple éclairage proposé : • celui de l'analyse des politiques publiques, qui retrace la genèse des législations européennes et décrypte les objectifs avancés par tel ou tel État, institution ou groupe d'acteurs, • celui de la sociologie du travail et des professions, qui s'intéresse à la manière dont chaque secteur d'activité aborde et régule le problème de l'articulation des temps de vie, • celui des pratiques sociales au sein des ménages, des manières de faire des individus, de leurs choix et préférences, négociations et arrangements concrets. • Ce livre fournit ainsi les clés pour appréhender ce problème dans différents contextes nationaux, repérer la diversité des réponses possibles et aborder de manière critique la question du « libre choix » des citoyens, à laquelle nombre de décideurs politiques ont recours aujourd'hui pour justifier leurs propositions de réforme.

This book brings together contributions by some of the top working life researchers from Finland and abroad. It offers a series of short essay-type chapters covering a broad variety of topics related to how labour markets, work and working life are continuously changing. The book has a strong cross-national approach and stresses the importance of studying both microlevel changes within macrolevel contexts as well as the microlevel mechanisms of changes at the macrolevel. The chapters are grouped in four parts. Part I deals with how life courses have changed, with special focus on the entry of women to the labour market and the determinants of their economic contribution. Part II discusses two circuits of labour migration: that of mostly high-skilled and regulated work and that of mostly low-skilled and unregulated work. However, it also shows that the boundaries between those two are not always clear. Part III focuses on how work itself is changing, using the examples of women attorneys' pro-bono work in Finland and Poland and the use of lean management in the Nordic public sector. Finally, in Part IV the authors explore the power of institutions and ideas in reshaping the way we work while labour markets are under pressure.
