This text focuses on underutilized wild plants that can help to reduce food deficiency in developing nations. Edible wild plants are viewed as a potential solution for overcoming food insecurity for families in these regions, with a specific focus on sustainable production and conservation measures. A full list of edible wild plants is included for the benefit of researchers, plus a pictorial guide for easy identification of these plants. This book is a systematized overview of wild edible plants eaten in the territory of present Estonia, with a focus on the systematic changes within the field. Starting in the end of 18th century, when the first data was published, the text is an extended version and compilation of articles on the subject published by Drs. Kalle and Sõukand and includes unpublished fieldwork results. This work covers changes and tendencies not covered previously due to the limits of article length. Included in this data is a general overview table containing all used plant taxa, parts used and purposes of use. More details on specific food-uses are provided in separate chapters analysing dynamics of changes of the importance of wild plants within the specific food category.

This book continues as volume 9 of a multi-compendium on Edible Medicinal and Non-Medicinal Plants. It covers such plants with edible modified storage subterranean stems (corms, rhizomes, stem tubers) and unmodified subterranean stem stolons, above ground swollen stems and hypocotyls, storage roots (tap root, lateral roots, root tubers), and bulbs, that are eaten as conventional or functional food as vegetables and spices, as herbal teas, and may provide a source of food additive or nutraceuticals. This volume covers plant species with edible modified stems, roots and bulbs from Acanthaceae to Zygophyllaceae (tabular) and 32 selected species in Alismataceae, Amaryllidaceae, Apiaceae, Araceae, Araliaceae, Asparagaceae, Asteraceae, Basellaceae, Brassicaceae and Campanulaceae in detail. This book provides the latest published nutritional data about wild edible plants traditionally consumed in the Mediterranean region. This information, not usually included in nutrient databases of foods, provides insight into the revalorization of wild food species and preservation of their traditional uses. The text also presents wild edible plants as alternatives to improve the diversity of modern Mediterranean diets, as they may represent valuable sources of nutrients often lacking in modern societies, such as fiber or vitamin B9. This work has expanded from the two initial groups, to involve different contributors, including experts from different countries, most of them bordering the Mediterranean Sea. As a result, a multidisciplinary approach has been achieved.The book is organized into four parts that deals with different aspects of wild edible plants, the last one and largest offering a detailed compilation of ethnobotanical and nutritional information about some of the most important Mediterranean wild edible plants.
