Welche Bedeutung haben digitale Medien für die Geschichte, wie entsteht eine digitale Geschichte? Wie funktioniert Forschen und Schreiben unter veränderten Bedingungen, wie die demokratische Auseinandersetzung um die Erinnerungskultur? Diesen zentralen Fragen einer digitalen Geschichtswissenschaft wird in dieser Studie anhand des paradigmatischen Visual History Archives (VHA) nachgegangen. Im VHA sind mehr als 49.000 digitale Zeugnisse Überlebender der Shoah gespeichert. Diese Studie analysiert zunächst die Quellengattung des Zeugnisses, die spezifischen Bedingungen der Zeugnisse im VHA, bevor ein theoretischer Rahmen für das Verstehen dieses digital turns, mit dem an Hannah Arendt und Homi Bhabha angelehnten Entwurf eines virtuellen Zwischenraums der Erinnerung formuliert wird. Die theoretischen Annahmen werden abschließend in drei Fallstudien zur Forschung, Darstellung und Rezeption geprüft. Ergebnis dieser Studie ist eine konzise Quellenkritik digitaler Zeugnisse, ihr Dispositiv.

Das Datum ist ein Ready-made der Zeiterfahrung. Es ist gegenüber den kalendarisch fixierten Katastrophen unschuldig und gibt doch Anlass: zu Erinnerung und Wiederholung; zu Erzählung und Ereignis. Das Buch untersucht das Hervortreten des Datums aus dem Paratext, die Transgression seiner vermeintlichen Funktion, reine Indikation zu sein. Die Möglichkeitsform ist im Datum nicht nur mitgegeben, sondern mitaufgegeben. Das Buch stellt Phänomene aus bildender Kunst und Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts in der Sowjetunion und Russland vor, in denen dies sichtbar, erzählbar, denkbar wird: Konstruktivistische Datumsbilder, Umdatierungen, Zeitungstage als Beispieltage, remontierende narrative Interventionen als Zeitgenoss*innenschaft, Datumsgedichte.

The book presents Chinese historical thinking by four articles. It is covered the ancient origin and the development to modernity and is commented by seven international experts. Presentation and comments find "second thought" by three other international scholars, and at the end the whole discussion find an answer by the authors of the first presentations. The complex structure of argumentation documents not only various ideas and interpretations of Chinese historical thinking, but represent the possibilities and problems of intercultural comparison at the same time.

Winner of the 2011 Isaac and Tamara Deutscher Memorial Prize. The essays collected here straddle four decades of work in both historiography and Marxist theory, combining source-based historical work in a wide range of languages with sophisticated discussion of Marx's categories. Key themes include the distinctions that are crucial to restoring complexity to the Marxist notion of a 'mode of production'; the emergence of medieval relations of production; the origins of capitalism; the dichotomy between free and unfree labour; and essays in agrarian history that range widely from Byzantine Egypt to 19th-century colonialism. The essays demonstrate the importance of reintegrating theory with history and of bringing history back into historical materialism. An introductory chapter ties the collection together and shows how historical materialists can develop an alternative to Marx's 'Asiatic mode of production'.
