This book provides dental professionals with a clear understanding of current clinical and scientific knowledge on the various aspects of pulp treatment for both primary and young permanent teeth. Diagnostic parameters are clearly presented, along with step-by-step descriptions of clinical procedures, including indirect and direct pulp treatments, pulpotomy, and pulpectomy. The rationale for the materials used in each technique and their individual merits and disadvantages are examined in detail. In the case of pulpotomy, all the materials used since the introduction of this treatment modality are discussed (e.g., formocresol, glutaraldehyde, ferric sulfate, and MTA) and the roles of sodium hypochlorite, electrofulguration, and laser therapy are elucidated. Special attention is devoted to pulpectomy and root canal treatment, with consideration of debriding and obturation techniques, rinsing solutions, and root-filling pastes. A further individual chapter is dedicated to restorations of teeth treated with the different types of pulp therapy. The various conservative treatment modalities are also presented, including specific treatments for immature nonvital permanent teeth. The concluding chapter looks to the future and the potential value of stem cells in pulp therapy.

This edited volume is about novel targeted therapies for the treatment of advanced neoplasms of the head and neck (HNSCC) with particular reference to oral squamous cell carcinomas and covers specific fields of cancer genetics and genomics for personalized medicine. The landmark studies from the HNSCC Cancer Genome Anatomy (TCGA) and the cancer Genome Atlas 2015 have revealed the multiplicity and diversity of genetic alterations in HNSCC. This remarkable body of information has elucidated novel druggable targets (eg. EGFR, mTOR, p53, survivin and aberrant microRNA) for therapeutic interventions in head and neck cancer. Readers will discover the importance of the biology and pathology of squamous cell carcinomas, the role of cancer stem cells and other factors that contribute to resistance to curative therapies such as hypoxia. We present an in-depth analysis of the HNSCC oncogenome describing the distinct molecular alterations in squamous cell carcinomas, which participate in specific molecular pathways whose dysregulation may contribute to most HNSCC cases. Final chapters of the book elucidate how these important cancer-driving molecular events and molecular pathways could be targeted to treat head and neck cancers and their therapeutic applications for targeted therapies based on clinical trials reported worldwide. This book is aimed at a broad audience, including scientists, physicians, surgeons, and post graduate students engaged in oncology and provide the readers with an up-to-date, interdisciplinary knowledge and tools to better understand the evolving areas of targeted gene therapy and the key concept of personalized medicine in head and neck cancer.

This comprehensive volume discusses in vitro laboratory development of insulin-producing cells. It encompasses multiple aspects of islet biology—from embryonic development and stem cell differentiation to clinical studies in islet transplantation, regulation of islet beta-cell regeneration, pancreatic progenitors, mathematical modelling of islet development, epigenetic regulation, and much more. The chapter authors represent leading laboratories from around the world who contribute their international perspectives and global expertise. Collectively, they provide the reader with a concise yet detailed knowledge of processes and current developments in islet regenerative biology. Pancreatic Islet Biology, part of the Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine series, is essential reading for researchers and clinicians in stem cells or endocrinology, especially those focusing on diabetes. .

Since publication of the previous edition of this benchmark text, numerous groundbreaking advances have occurred in stem cell research, cloning, tissue engineering, and in vitro toxicity testing. These and other developments have been incorporated into this fully revised and expanded Fifth Edition of Culture of Animal Cells. In addition, to answer the needs of the exponential increase in newcomers to cell culture, particularly in the biopharmaceutical industry, a completely new chapter on training in cell culture technology has been introduced. The most complete resource on the techniques, equipment, principles, and practices of animal cell culture, this text offers a complete background related to growth of animal cells in culture. Beginning with laboratory design, safety, validation and bioethics, then continuing with preparation of media, primary culture and cell lines, through to characterization and authentication, contamination, specialized techniques, and troubleshooting, the coverage includes: An allnew section of training exercises, separated into basic, intermediate, and advanced procedures, crossreferenced to the relevant protocols New coverage of stem cells, bioethics, validation, cloning, cell signaling, in vitro toxicity testing, and tissue engineering An expanded fullcolor atlas section, with images of primary culture, cell lines, subculture, differentiation, cancer cells and transformation, threedimensional culture, contamination, and specialized equipment Enhanced treatment of troubleshooting, with full crossreferencing to the relevant protocols and sections of text Fully updated references The clearest, most consistent presentation of stepbystep protocols available Numerous diagrams, photographs, tables, and charts Detailed and uptodate information on reagent preparation and sourcing of materials and equipment, including a fully updated list of suppliers and other resources with Web sites Indispensable for clinical and biopharmaceutical researchers and scientists, students, trainees, and technicians, this landmark text presents the most accessible and comprehensive introduction available to the culture and experimental manipulation of animal cells.

This unique book explores the role of retrotransposons in human health and disease. The ability of retrotransposons to affect the structure of human genes is recognized since the late 80’s. However, the advances of deep-sequencing technologies have shed new light on the extent of retrotransposon-mediated genome variations. These progresses have also led to the discovery that retrotransposon activity is not restricted to the germline - resulting in inheritable genetic variations - but can also mobilize in somatic tissues, such as embryonic stem cells, neuronal progenitor cells, or in many cancers. This book covers topics related to the effects of retrotransposon insertions, and their consequences on germline and somatic genome dynamics, but also discuss the role and impact of retrotransposons sequences in a broader context, including a number of novel topics that emerged recently (long non-coding RNA, neuronal disorders, exaptation) with unexpected connections between retrotransposons, stem cell maintenance, placentation, circadian cycles or aging.
