Gout: Basic Science and Clinical Practice is a thoroughly researched comprehensive text which covers all important aspects of gout, including its genetics, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management. Gout is probably the most common rheumatic disease after osteoarthritis and is becoming more common with the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in the US, and in many other countries. Only about 10% of patients with gout are treated by rheumatologists and this often leads to inadequate diagnosis and treatment in general medical practice. Written by an expert in the field this book is valuable reference for rheumatologists and others in the medical profession who are interested in understanding and managing this important disease.

This book details the practice of telerheumatology. Telemedicine is defined as the delivery of healthcare and the exchange of healthcare information across distances. Following, telerheumatology is the delivery of rheumatology care through telemedicine. There exists an increasing demand from patients, caregivers, and healthcare systems for access to academic specialists through telemedicine. This has been the case for the past several years and the demand has only increased with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. There is currently a lack of rheumatologists in rural areas and that is expected to spread to a general lack by 2025. Telerheumatology offers an excellent and timely solution to fill these gaps and provide care Telerheumatology care has been shown to be feasible and quite effective. The current COVID-19 pandemic has thrust the concept of telemedicine into the spotlight. However, not all telerheumatology care is the same and there exists many nuances and differences when examining telerheumatology care across the United States and the world. After comprehensively reviewing the origins of telerheumatology, this work defines in detail the current practice of telerheumatology, along with the specific impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and all applications of telerheumatology. Expert authors also provide a detailed roadmap for providers to initiate, sustain, and grow a telerheumatology program. The book concludes by covering future directions of telerheumatology, including areas for expansion, improvement, and innovation. After reading this work, the editor and all the contributing authors hope that it will inspire, provoke thought and discussion, and lead to increased adaptation of providing telerheumatology care by rheumatologists and rheumatology providers.

This book reviews the major components of synovial fluid analysis, with an emphasis on crystal recognition. Synovial fluid analysis is the required gold standard test for the definitive diagnosis of septic and crystal induced arthritis, the most frequent causes of acute inflammatory arthritis. Synovial fluid is obtained routinely from patients with acute arthritis by clinicians in many specialties. Fluids are sent to the clinical pathology and microbiology laboratories for analysis, but are also frequently examined directly by rheumatologists and others for the presence of crystals. Competency in synovial fluid crystal analysis is a requirement for all graduating rheumatology fellows in the United States, and is an expectation for musculoskeletal disease physicians internationally - although competency is assumed with a variable degree of rigor. This book comprehensively provides practical knowledge presented by skilled and experienced clinicians and pathologists, fulfilling an educational niche for teaching programs and a reference need for academic and community hospital clinical pathology laboratories. This is an ideal introductory guide for rheumatology trainees, as well as a reference text for rheumatologists, infectious disease consultants, orthopedists, cytotechnologists, and advanced nurse practitioners.
