How to determine transistor sizes and currents when the supply voltages of analog CMOS circuits do not exceed 1.2V and transistors operate in weak, moderate or strong inversion? The gm/ID methodology offers a solution provided a reference transconductance over drain current ratio is available. The reference may be the result of measurements carried out on real physical transistors or advanced models. The reference may also take advantage of a compact model. In The gm/ID Methodology, a Sizing Tool for Low-Voltage Analog CMOS Circuits, we compare the semi-empirical to the compact model approach. Small numbers of parameters make the compact model attractive for the model paves the way towards analytic expressions unaffordable otherwise. The E.K.V model is a good candidate, but when it comes to short channel devices, compact models are either inaccurate or loose straightforwardness. Because sizing requires basically a reliable large signal representation of MOS transistors, we investigate the potential of the E.K.V model when its parameters are supposed to be bias dependent. The model-driven and semi-empirical methods are compared considering the Intrinsic Gain Stage and a few more complex circuits. A series of MATLAB files found on extras-springer.com allow redoing the tests.

This book describes novel circuit and system solutions for the design of analog electronic interfaces for resistive, capacitive and temperature sensors, also showing a wide variation range, with the intent to give a complete overview of the first analog front-ends. After a description of the main kinds of sensors and their definitions, the book presents novel electronic circuits, most of which do not require any initial calibration, also designed with analog microelectronic techniques, at transistor level in a standard CMOS integrated technology. These solutions utilize both AC and DC excitation voltages for the employed sensor and are developed both in Voltage-Mode approach (which considers the use of Operational Amplifiers or Operational Transconductance Amplifiers as the main active blocks) and in Current-Mode approach (using the Second Generation Current Conveyor as the main, active device), as well as with Low Voltage Low Power characteristics when designed for portable applications and instrumentations. The interfaces described in this book can be fabricated easily both as prototype boards, for a fast characterization (simply implemented by students and technicians) and as integrated circuits, using modern design techniques. Provides a thorough introduction and description of sensors and basic resistive, capacitive and temperature sensor interfacing together with their main characteristics and parameter definitions; Includes a complete overview of the first analog front-ends, in particular for wide-range resistive and capacitive physical and chemical sensors; Describes interfaces that are easy to understand and implement both with discrete components for PCB fabrication and in a standard CMOS integrated technology.

Analog design at ultra-low supply voltages is an important challenge for the semiconductor research community and industry. Analog Circuit Design Techniques at 0.5V covers challenges for the design of MOS analog and RF circuits at a 0.5V power supply voltage. All design techniques presented are true low voltage techniques - all nodes in the circuits are within the power supply rails. The circuit implementations of body and gate input fully differential amplifiers are also discussed. These building blocks enable us to build continuous-time filters, track-and-hold circuits, and continuous-time sigma delta modulators. Current books on low voltage analog design typically cover techniques for supply voltages down to approximately 1V. This book presents novel ideas and results for operation from much lower supply voltages and the techniques presented are basic circuit techniques that are widely applicable beyond the scope of the presented examples. Analog Circuit Design Techniques at 0.5V is written for analog circuit designers and researchers as well as graduate students studying semiconductors and integrated circuit design.

Despite the fact that in the digital domain, designers can take full benefits of IPs and design automation tools to synthesize and design very complex systems, the analog designers’ task is still considered as a ‘handcraft’, cumbersome and very time consuming process. Thus, tremendous efforts are being deployed to develop new design methodologies in the analog/RF and mixed-signal domains. This book collects 16 state-of-the-art contributions devoted to the topic of systematic design of analog, RF and mixed signal circuits. Divided in the two parts Methodologies and Techniques recent theories, synthesis techniques and design methodologies, as well as new sizing approaches in the field of robust analog and mixed signal design automation are presented for researchers and R/D engineers. .
