This book explores experimental approaches to the design and construction of wooden structures in architecture, while presenting the results of an artistic research project. Through the use of digital tools, the anatomy of wood becomes a design-determining principle for spatial structures. The architects and artists also explore the potential of traditional craftsmanship and derive from this a material-oriented practice. Structures are not designed here for a specific use, but rather open up various usage possibilities due to their unique spatial and geometric properties. The documentation provides insight into an open-ended research process. Guest contributions reflect on the underlying concepts and thus the future relevance of wood as a building material.

This lively introduction to Japanese joinery not only delves lovingly into the unique history and development of Japanese carpentry, but also reveals many secrets of Japanese joinery. Presenting 48 joints, selected from among the several hundred known and used today, this visually exciting book will please anyone who has ever been moved by the sheer beauty of wood. With the clear isometric projections complementing the 64 pages of stunning photographs, even the weekend carpenter can duplicate these bequests from the traditional Japanese carpenter, which can be applied to projects as large as the buildings for which most of them were originally devised or to projects as small as a sewing box.

A compact presentation of the loadbearing structures and the physics necessary for roof construction, in addition to the current standards and directives, make this volume an indispensable standard work. Built examples illustrate the theoretical details. Some 38 examples, which include 11 classic buildings and 27 structures from the last five years, show the construction of roofs, paying particular attention to important features such as ridge, hip, eaves, valley, verge and penetration. The book is devided according to the type of roof elements and jointing techniques. Thirteen kinds of roofs and the relevant materials, including tatch, wood, slate, clay, concrete, fibre-cement, bitumen, glass, metal, membranes and synthetic materials are documented. Also described in detail are essential topics such as ventilation, vapour barriers and airtightness, insulation and drainage ; refurbishment and energy conservation are also examined in detail.
