Modeste précepteur d'un jeune noble allemand, Jean Pillot fait paraître à Paris en 1550 une grammaire française rédigée en latin, qui connut une vingtaine d'éditions. Assez fortement remanié et augmenté en 1561, l'ouvrage propose des éléments de phonétique pratique et un traitement des parties du discours. Pillot accorde une place particulière au verbe, la catégorie la plus mal tra itée à ses yeux par ses contemporains, en donnant de nombreux tableaux de conjugaison. Les parties du discours indéclinables sont étudiées à partir d'exemples littéraires latins, dont la traduction est censée fournir un stock d'expressions françaises directement utilisables dans la conversation. Plus soucieux d'efficacité pédagogique que d'innovation théorique, mais capable de se détacher du moule hérité de la tradition grammaticale latine, Pillot fournit un ouvrage clair et maniable, qui aborde de nombreux problèmes dans le domaine de la prononciation et de la morphologie. La Gallicae linguae Institutio, une des premières méthodes de " FLE " (français langue étrangère), influencera toute une lignée de grammaires françaises à l'usage des Allemands.
