Annotation This book contains the successful submissions to a Special Issue of Energies on the subject area of "Engineering Fluid Dynamics." The topic of engineering fluid dynamics includes both experimental as well as computational studies. Of special interest were submissions from the fields of mechanical, chemical, marine, safety, and energy engineering. We welcomed both original research articles as well as review articles. After one year, 22 papers were submitted and 12 were accepted for publication. The average processing time was 65.2 days. The authors had the following geographical distribution: China (four); Italy (two); Korea (one); Germany (one); UK (one); Ireland (one); Australia (one); Sweden (one); Japan (one); Spain (one); Norway (one). Papers covered topics such as heat transfer in shell and helically coiled tube heat exchangers, the multiphase modeling of sprays, flashing flows, as well as mixing in a bubbling fluidized bed. Two papers related to heating ventilation and air condition (HVAC) are included, namely evaporation and condensation in the underfloor space of detached houses and air distribution in a railway vehicle. Three papers dealt with various aspects of pumps and turbines: a performance prediction method for pumps as turbines; noise radiation in a centrifugal pump; periodic fluctuations in energy efficiency in centrifugal pumps; and study of a high-pressure external gear pump. One paper used both laser doppler velocimetry (LDV) and CFD in the study of flow behind a semi-circular step cylinder. Finally, a paper investigated the influence of the equivalence ratio (ER) and feedstock particle size on birch wood gasification.

The present book on Hydrodynamics - Concepts and Experiments contains six chapters, each of which devoted to a topic considered interesting to compose this book. Although the tools used in the different chapters are somewhat superposed, a first classification may be presented as: the first two chapters describe numerical models; the third and fourth chapters use experimental tools and results; and the fourth, fifth and sixth chapters present conceptual aspects of fluid dynamics. A more detailed description is furnished in the sequence. The six topics that compose this book may be resumed as: Flow-Structure Interactions, Hydrodynamic Models and Biological processes in Coastal Waters, Useful Cavitation, New Concepts in Hydraulic Jumps, Lagrangian Formulation of Fluid Dynamics, and Small Perturbations in Viscous Fluids.

Dr. H. S. Tsien (also known as Dr. Qian Xuesen), is celebrated as the leader of the research that produced China's first ballistic missiles, its first satellite, and the Silkworm anti-ship missile. This volume collects the scientific works of Dr. H. S. Tsien (also known as Dr. Qian Xuesen) and his co-authors, which published between 1938-1956 when he was studying and working in the United States as a graduate student, scientist and professor, when aeronautic exploration stepped up from low speed to high speed regimes and astronautic technology entered its infant stage. <

Fluid flows are encountered in our daily life as well as in engineering industries. Identifying the temporal and spatial distribution of fluid dynamic properties is essential in analyzing the processes related to flows. These properties, such as velocity, turbulence, temperature, pressure, and concentration, play important roles in mass transfer, heat transfer, reaction rate, and force analysis. However, obtaining the analytical solution of these fluid property distributions is technically difficult or impossible. With the technique of finite difference methods or finite element methods, attaining numerical solutions from the partial differential equations of mass, momentum, and energy have become achievable. Therefore, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has emerged and been widely applied in various fields. This book collects the recent studies that have applied the CFD technique in analyzing several representative processes covering mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, environmental engineering, and thermal engineering.

The accurate prediction of multi-physical and multi-scale physical/chemical/mechanical processes in engineering remains a challenging problem despite considerable work in this area and the acceptance of finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics as design tools. This book intends to provide the reader with an overview of the latest developments in computational techniques used in various engineering disciplines. The book includes leading-edge scientific contributions of computational and applied mathematics, computer science and engineering focusing on the modelling and simulation of complex engineering systems and multi-physical/multi-scale engineering problems. The following topics are covered: numerical analysis and algorithms, software development, coupled analysis, multi-criteria optimization as they applied to all kinds of applied and emerging problems in energy systems, additive manufacturing, propulsion systems, and thermal engineering.
