(Introduction, page 3)

"Perspectives on ITS" is a collection of the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) writings of Professor Joseph M. Sussman from MIT. Professor Sussman is a long-time major participant in the ITS world, beginning with his work on the core writing team in the original "IVHS" Strategic Plan in 1991-92, and continuing on to the present day. He has worked in a number of ITS area and is a keen observer of the ITS scene in general. The book contains extended articles on various aspects of ITS and perspectives on the future of the field, building on its rich history; organizational issues related to ITS – in particular, regionalism and the transportation / information infrastructure; and ITS’ implications for the transportation profession at large and for transportation education. In addition it contains 14 selected columns from the ITS Quarterly.

This volume of Advances in Soft Computing contains the accepted and outstanding papers presented at the Lakeside Conference 2010 in Carinthia, Austria. The topic of the Lakeside Conference 2010, Data and Mobility – Transporting Information into Intelligent Traffic and Transportation Services, was chosen to underline the importance of information and mobility in transport and to discuss current activities in this sector. The development of traffic management systems, under the influence of new technologies, is a fast-changing subject and needs experts to guide us in the right direction. Worldwide, a variety of solutions is being developed to make traffic management safer, more sustainable and efficient. The 18 papers published in this book represent the work of national and international companies, universities and research & development departments and reflect a number of current research streams. The articles cover significant recent developments in the field, both in terms of data and mobility, self-learning traffic monitoring systems, ETC-based traffic telematics solutions and naturalistic driving – a new method of data collection. The wide range of activities also contains reports offering viewpoints on cross-border issues such as transnational nowcasting systems or the comparison between the European and the American ITS system architecture. The organizers also took special care to include papers dealing with national and geographical characteristics, such as the standardized documentation of flood damage and winter maintenance management systems.

Does application of countdown timers at traffic lights affect pedestrian safety? How can one model walking routes in transport systems using open source tools? What features should be particularly taken into account while implementing highly advanced ICT components in contemporary towns? What scenario for the development of Intelligent Transport Systems should be chosen for a specific area? How to estimate the impact of the substances emitted by vehicles on climate changes? Answers to these and many other questions can be found in this publication. It also comprises numerous analyses based on legitimate data sources, presenting the close relation between travel behaviours and the organisational as well as technical changes introduced in what is contemporarily referred as smart cities. At present and in the nearest future, technologically advanced transport systems require and will require considerable development of electromobility and the emphasis being placed on multimodality, therefore all these problems have been properly addressed in this publication. With regard to the research results discussed and the selected solutions which find practical application, the publication is dedicated to three groups of recipients: ·Scientists and researchers (ITS field) ·Local authorities (responsible for the transport system on the urban and the regional level) ·Representatives of business (traffic strategy management) and industry (manufacturers of ITS components). The publication entitled Intelligent Transport Systems and Travel Behaviour contains selected papers submitted to and presented at the 13th ”Transport Systems. Theory and Practice” Scientific and Technical Conference organised by the Department of Transport Systems and Traffic Engineering at the Faculty of Transport of the Silesian University of Technology. The conference was held on 19-21 September 2016 in Katowice (Poland). More details at www.TSTP.polsl.pl.

This book develops a methodology for designing feedback control laws for dynamic traffic assignment (DTA) exploiting the introduction of new sensing and information-dissemination technologies to facilitate the introduction of real-time traffic management in intelligent transportation systems. Three methods of modeling the traffic system are discussed: partial differential equations representing a distributed-parameter setting; continuous-time ordinary differential equations (ODEs) representing a continuous-time lumped-parameter setting; and discreet-time ODEs representing a discrete-time lumped-parameter setting. Feedback control formulations for reaching road-user-equilibrium are presented for each setting and advantages and disadvantage of using each are addressed. The closed-loop methods described are proposed expressly to avoid the counter-productive shifting of bottlenecks from one route to another because of driver over-reaction to routing information. The second edition of Feedback Control Theory for Dynamic Traffic Assignment has been thoroughly updated with completely new chapters: a review of the DTA problem and emphasizing real-time-feedback-based problems; an up-to-date presentation of pertinent traffic-flow theory; and a treatment of the mathematical solution to the traffic dynamics. Techinques accounting for the importance of entropy are further new inclusions at various points in the text. Researchers working in traffic control will find the theoretical material presented a sound basis for further research; the continual reference to applications will help professionals working in highway administration and engineering with the increasingly important task of maintaining and smoothing traffic flow; the extensive use of end-of-chapter exercises will help the graduate student and those new to the field to extend their knowledge. Advances in Industrial Control reports and encourages the transfer of technology in control engineering. The rapid development of control technology has an impact on all areas of the control discipline. The series offers an opportunity for researchers to present an extended exposition of new work in all aspects of industrial control.
