L'intérêt de cet ouvrage est de présenter l'ensemble du traitement du signal radar sous forme d'une suite continue d'étapes de calculs qui permet de suivre l'évolution progressive du signal depuis sa réception par le radar jusqu'à la création d'un écho associé.L'auteur a en outre pris le parti de faciliter la compréhension en proposant pour chaque étape du traitement une partie "explications" en langage courant sans équations, une partie "graphique" qui permet de visualiser le signal en entrée et en sortie pour chaque étape, et enfin une partie "équations" qui formalise l'expression analytique du signal de sortie. This book addresses two groups of readers. The first includes communication engineers and scientists and students of communication theory who need to cope with basic problems arising in communication with optical signals. The ultimate detectability of optical signals and the accuracy with which their parameters can be estimated cannot be ascertained by the methods of detection theory that apply at radio frequencies; the fundamental concepts of the theory must be revised, and this book shows how. The second group of readers comprises physicists interested in the foundations and applications of quantum mechanics, for whom it may be fruitful to consider quatum measurement as a process of decision among alternative density operators, or as an estimation of certain parameters of the density operator of a quantum system. May they find the problems analyzed here a challenge to their conceptions of the quantum theory.

The chapters in this volume were presented at the July–August 2006 NATO Advanced Study Institute on Imaging for Detection and Identi?cation. The conference was held at the beautiful Il Ciocco resort near Lucca, in the glo- ous Tuscany region of northern Italy. For the eighth time we gathered at this idyllicspottoexploreandextendthereciprocitybetweenmathematicsand- gineering. The dynamic interaction between world-renowned scientists from the usually disparate communities of pure mathematicians and applied sci- tists which occurred at our seven previous ASI’s continued at this meeting. The fusion of basic ideas in mathematics, radar, sonar, biology, and ch- istry with ongoing improvements in hardware and computation offers the promise of much more sophisticated and accurate detection and identi?cation capabilities than currently exist. Coupled with the dramatic rise in the need for surveillance in innumerable aspects of our daily lives, brought about by hostile acts deemed unimaginable only a few short years ago, the time is ripe for image processing scientists in these usually diverse ?elds to join together in a concerted effort to combat the new brands of terrorism. This ASI was one important initial step.
