Abstract

New Perspectives on Aloe will cover research studies of aloe by the CAP (Creation Aloe Pharmaceuticals) team, which studied various aspects of aloe over a period of more than 10 years. The team was organized into two groups: the isolation and analysis group, which purified many components in terms of low molecular weight compounds, carbohydrates, proteins present in aloe, and the assay group, which determined the efficacy of those components. This type of target-oriented, organized research provides a model of how to conduct multidisciplinary research. The contents include a brief introduction of aloe, isolation, purification, and structural analysis of components, and various physiological effects of those components for possible use as health foods or drugs. Various functions identified were wound healing, angiogenesis, anti-allergy, skin whitening, stimulation of cell proliferation such as liver or kidney, protection against nephrotoxicity, and immune modulation. Moreover, we suggest standardization and quality control procedures for manufacturing raw aloe, and how to develop related products for successful application of aloe. This is important in Korea because last year the Korean government listed aloe as a health food for which the government establishes regulatory laws. Therefore, many scientists in Korea who are interested in studying health foods would be interested in this kind of text. Other major fields related to this kind of research will be medicine, biology, pharmaceutics, natural products and analytics.

Abstract

In questi ultimi anni la popolarità dell’aloe ha conosciuto un notevole incremento: a parte l’uso tradizionale di questa pianta e dei suoi preparati come lassativo, è interessante chiedersi se questa droga vegetale possegga altre proprietà farmacologiche, la cui fama ha portato addiritura a definirla una miracle plant o wonder drug. Obiettivo di questo volume è valutare le possibili applicazioni terapeutiche di questa pianta. Dopo una presentazione delle caratteristiche botaniche del genere Aloe, si analizza la struttura della foglia, dalla quale si ottengono preparazioni di interesse farmaceutico e cosmetico, e si passano in rassegna i principali componenti chimici. Com’è ben noto, l’attività dell’aloe è dovuta soprattutto ad alcune sostanze specifiche, dette principi attivi, e ad altre di minore interesse farmacologico. Oggi è stato accertato che questei ultime possono essere definite adiuvanti perché potenziano l’attività terapeutica del pool di sostanze attive. Inoltre è possibile che l’aloe, come droga vegetale nella sua integrità, possa a sua volta agire da adiuvante nei riguardi di terapie convenzionali in numerosi campi (gastrointestinale, dermatologico, diabetico e oncologico), come mostrano alcuni trial clinici. Ad oggi esiste un gran numero di studi (più di 4000 per la sola Aloe vera o Aloe barbadensis) sugli effetti biologici dei preparati di aloe. Questo testo è rivolto non solo a medici, farmacisti, veterinari e a chi opera nel settore erboristico e fitoterapico, ma anche ai consumatori che vogliano saperne di più su questa pianta dalle numerose proprietà.

Abstract

Natural polymers are already used for a variety of biomedical applications, including drug delivery, wound healing, tissue engineering, biosensors, etc. However, they have also found other applications, for example, in the food industry, the pharmaceutical industry, as firefighting materials, water purification, etc. Different polysaccharide and protein-based systems have been developed. They each have their properties that render them useful for certain applications such as the water solubility of alginate, the thermo-sensitivity of chitosan, the abundance of cellulose and starch, or the cell adhesion and proliferation of gelatin and collagen. This Special Issue will explore the design, synthesis, processing, characterization, and applications of new functional natural-based polymers.
