"Introducing readers to the stunning breadth of Edward Ruscha's (b. 1937) creative output over the course of his entire life, this book includes materials dating back to his childhood and extending to his present-day output. The projects featured here fall outside Ruscha's production of paintings, drawings, prints, and artists' books. Many of these are unknown and most are reproduced here for the first time. Composed of three sections-Projects and Ephemera; Contour Gauge Profiles; and Painted Book Covers-the book offers Ruscha enthusiasts and scholars a hitherto unknown aspect of Ruscha's practice, while also showing how these projects coincide with, and sometimes even prefigure, the artistic work for which he is best known. The approximately 270 painted book covers, begun in 1990, utilize found books as support for small paintings and drawings. The 57 contour gauge profiles are silhouette-like profiles made using a mechanical device for reproducing contours. The largest section, Projects and Ephemera, consists of installations, sculpture and objects, films, book and poster design, utilitarian works, and more"--

During the 1960s and 1970s, magazines became an important new site of artistic practice, functioning as an alternative exhibition space for the dematerialized practices of conceptual art. Allen looks at the most important of these magazines in their heyday and compiles an illustrated directory of hundreds of others.

A vital survey of 32 internationally recognized artists who make books as part of their creative practice - features 500 images of these rarely seen works. The 'artist's book' has long been an important form of expression, and 'Artists Who Make Books' showcases 32 internationally recognized artists who have integrated book production into their larger creative practice. This volume features a selection of books by every artist included - many rarely seen - an accompanying text providing further context, and over 500 illustrations of covers and interior spreads. Insightful interviews with Tauba Auerbach, Paul Chan, and Walther König, and in-depth essays by Benjamin H.D. Buchloh and Lynda Morris round out this illuminating survey.

The lavishly illustrated Regarding Beauty surveys late twentieth-century Western art to address why the timeless notion of beauty has recently been so hotly contested and, in the 1980's and 1990's in particular, so highly politicized.... Regarding Beauty argues that beauty has not disappeared from the dialogue of art and that, on the contrary, it has persisted as an essential element in the evolution of art as the 20th century passes into history.
