Cette exposition organisée par le Whitney Museum of American Art à New York illustre le travail de l'artiste de la fin des années 1950 au début des années 1990. Ruscha, né en 1937, a d'abord été peintre, influencé par le mouvement du 'pop art'. Puis son travail évolue ; il essaie diverses techniques, travaille des séries, fait des photos et des films, produit des livres photographiques, réalise des tableaux virtuels en projetant de la lumière dans des pièces vides... Le travail photographique de Ed Ruscha a été relativement peu exposé même s'il montre bien des liens avec les autres sphères de son activité artistique, notamment le dessin : sujets-objets, appartements, paysages urbains, composition, utilisations de la lumière, effets d'ombres. During the 1960s and 1970s, magazines became an important new site of artistic practice, functioning as an alternative exhibition space for the dematerialized practices of conceptual art. Allen looks at the most important of these magazines in their heyday and compiles an illustrated directory of hundreds of others.

The lavishly illustrated Regarding Beauty surveys late twentieth-century Western art to address why the timeless notion of beauty has recently been so hotly contested and, in the 1980's and 1990's in particular, so highly politicized.... Regarding Beauty argues that beauty has not disappeared from the dialogue of art and that, on the contrary, it has persisted as an essential element in the evolution of art as the 20th century passes into history.
