This book discusses competence, teacher competence, and professional error competence of teachers, and emphasizes the need for a training programme that supports the latter. The book starts out by presenting results from previous studies that underline the necessity to train professional error competence of teachers, especially in the field of accounting. The studies analysed include research in the field of accounting, and on the efficacy of teacher training. Next, considerations on training programmes are presented. From these analyses, a training programme was designed to support professional error competence in accounting. This training programme aims for increased knowledge about students’ errors (content knowledge) and offers strategies to handle these errors (pedagogical content knowledge). Both are central facets of professional error competence. The book describes the development, characteristics, implementation, and evaluation of this programme. It details the test platform that was developed and used for the assessment of professional error competence, and critically discusses the results from the evaluation of the training programme from various perspectives. The current discussion on teacher training and expertise is influenced by empirical results obtained in international large-scale studies such as PISA and TIMSS. The findings of the studies underpin the discussion on teaching quality and teachers’ professional competences. The key issue is that teacher competence has an impact on teaching quality and this, in turn, influences students’ achievements. International comparative studies reveal that teachers often lack central competence facets, and therefore it is assumed that standard teacher training programmes may fail to successfully prepare student teachers for their tasks. Therefore, customized training programmes are currently being discussed. Their focus is mostly on pedagogical content knowledge and classroom practices, because these competence facets are essential for teaching quality.

Vocational education and training in Germany, especially the Dual System of Vocational Education and Training, is receiving great attention and appreciation in some EU countries, not least against the background of very high youth unemployment. Seit einigen Jahren liefert die berufs- und wirtschaftspädagogisch orientierte Lehr-Lernforschung Erkenntnisse zum Zusammenhang von Fachwissen und Kompetenzentwicklung und entwickelt spezifische Verfahren zur Diagnose von Handlungskompetenz in beruflichen Domänen, für die im Dualen System ausgebildet wird. Dieses forschungsmethodische Instrumentarium wird zunehmend auch hinsichtlich der Zielgruppe des Bildungspersonals, allen voran der Lehrenden an beruflichen Schulen insbesondere in der ersten Phase ihrer Professionalisierung, eingesetzt. Der vorliegende Band stellt außerdem Studien zum Kompetenzerwerb in verschiedenen Domänen, zu Methoden der Messung von Kompetenzentwicklung sowie zur didaktischen Gestaltung im Vordergrund. Hiermit sind immer auch Basisthemen der Entwicklung beruflicher Handlungskompetenz berührt, die die Grundlage des Dualen Systems darstellen, auch in der Analyse konsekutiver Ausbildungsformen. Schließlich werden Fragen nach den Auswirkungen des demografischen Wandels auf die Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten beruflicher Schulen fokussiert, die in den nächsten Jahren sicherlich eine verstärkte Wahrnehmung und Bearbeitung durch die berufs- und wirtschaftspädagogische Forschung erhalten werden. For some years now, vocational and business education-oriented teaching and learning research has been providing insights into the connection between specialist knowledge and competence development and developing specific methods for diagnosing action competence in vocational domains for which training is provided in Germany's dual vocational training system. This research methodological instrument is increasingly used with regard to the target group of educational personnel, above all teachers at vocational schools, especially in the first phase of their professionalisation. This volume also focuses on studies on the acquisition of competencies in various domains, on methods of measuring competency development and on didactic design. This always touches on the basic themes of the development of vocational action competence, which form the basis of the dual system, also in the analysis of consecutive forms of training. Finally, questions about the effects of demographic change are focused on the development possibilities of vocational schools, which in the coming years will undoubtedly be increasingly perceived and dealt with by vocational and business education research.
