In 1966, architect Robert Venturi published Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture, a manifesto that became one of the twentieth century's most important statements about architecture. Drawing on both vernacular and high-style sources, Venturi introduced new lessons from the buildings of architects who were well known, like Michelangelo and Alvar Aalto, and those whose work had then been forgotten, like Frank Furness and Edwin Lutyens. Arguing against the diagrammatic forms that dominated the field at that time, Venturi made a case instead for "the difficult whole." Fifty years later, this book offers a fresh analysis and thorough re-evaluation of Venturi's landmark work and its legacy. Through a radical rereading of material from the archives of Venturi, Scott Brown, and Associates, the editors propose a credible alternative to contemporary architectural discourse, one that takes account of Venturi's arguments and offers a way forward. Featuring essays, as well as close analyses of twenty-eight projects by Venturi, Rauch, and Scott Brown, The Difficult Whole is sure to spark discussion-and inspiration-throughout the worlds of architecture and design.

"The Urban Fact examines Aldo Rossi's formulation of a theory of the city, developed over the period of roughly ten years, from Architecture of the City published in 1966, to Analogous City exhibited in 1976. Rossi's theory is not taken as an abstract argument, but is seen through his work from that period. A careful selection of twenty-three projects is here presented at face value. These projects, bound by the reality of their setting, but also charged with cultural and civic ambition, illustrate the intricacy of an architectural project as a complex ""whole"". They also demonstrate how architecture could contribute to the changing urban context of the field, hinting at an oeuvre painfully aware of its limitations and stubborn in its intentions."

The future is not as far away as it might seem. What seemed a problem of the next generation now has become a problem of tomorrow. We are accelerating towards a future that is evermore present, guided by political and economic forces that seem unintelligible. Is this quick-paced intangible progression, the role of the architect is at stake. How can architecture keep up with society? Can it adapt quickly enough to frame it? And is so, what should that frame look like? The book features interviews with the professors and essays on their specific studio topics. Michael Young investigates the past from the future in “Aesthetics of Accelerationism: The Icelandic Infrastructure 2036-2056.” Kersten Geers analyzes visions for agricultural ensembles for communal living in “Architecture Without Consent 19: Almost Classicism.” And David Erdman looks to the potential of building on top of housing estates in Hong Kong in “Objects and Qualities.”

Italian architect Giancarlo de Carlo (1919-2005) first visited Urbino in 1951 to carry out a minor refurbishment of the offices of the rector of the University. This was the beginning of his lifetime engagement with the small town where he continued working over the next five decades. This book is part of the „Everything without Content“ series by Kersten Geers, Jelena Pancevac and Joris Kritis, and it presents the work Giancarlo de Carlo built in Urbino in the 1960s and 70s, in the shadow of his involvement in Team 10 debates that challenged modernist doctrines on architecture and urbanism. The eight buildings in this book are presented in drawings by students of the Academy of Architecture USI, Mendriso, and photographs by Stefano Graziani.

Pieter Vermeersch (Belgium, 1973) is well-known for his gradual wall paintings that create powerful visual experiences. Vermeersch combines painting with architecture and works on a variety of surfaces such as canvas, marble and photographs. Beyond the traditional borders of the canvas, his investigations result in large-scale spatial interventions that manipulate the space. Time, colour and space are the building blocks of his oeuvre: these concepts lie at the foundation of his gradual murals and architectural interventions. 17 Signatures presents a complete survey of Vermeersch's work, from the beginning of his career until his recent solo exhibition at Museum M Leuven, and includes a broad selection of painted works (canvases, stones, photographs, walls), installations and sketches. The book is organized by theme and is beautifully designed by the Dutch design studio Mevis & Van Deursen. Every copy is unique as each cover is printed in a different colour variation.Exhibition: Museum M, Leuven, Belgium (15.03.-11.08.2019).

Inaki Abalos and Juan Herreros established their studio in Madrid in 1984 and working together until 2006, when the firm was dissolved. They mainly realised projects in Spain. Both architects are still active internationally, Inaki Abalos with Abalos+Sentkiewicz, based in Madrid and Cambridge (MA), Juan Herreros with Estudio Herreros in Madrid. The archive of Abalos & Herreros was donated to the Canadian Center for Architecture (CCA) in Montreal in 2012. It comprises some 250 projects dating from 1985-2008: sketches and drawings, collages, related text documents, slides and models. This new book presents three contemporary encounters with the Abalos & Herreros archive at CCA. The architects OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen, Juan Jose Castellon and SO - IL conducted research into the archive and developed specific readings of the material. The book reframes these research projects, showing archival material in its current state and reinterpreting it. The essays offer more background to the research and also give voice to Inaki Abalos and Juan Herreros themselves.Richly illustrated, the book reveals as much about the interests of a new generation of architects as about the work of Abalos & Herreros.

Quel rôle l'histoire peut-elle jouer dans la pratique de l'architecture contemporaine ? Kersten Geers combines his work at OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen architecture studio with his academic work and writing. In this compilation of essays, the author writes about diverse historical architects – from Bramante, Scamozzi and Mies van der Rohe to Aldo Rossi, James Stirling, Álvaro Siza or Robert Venturi – to compose a kind of theory of contemporary architecture in which he deals with issues such as language and form.

Architecture of the past twenty years has had to respond to contradictory requirements: on the one hand, it had to be scaled back in order to provide neutral structures open for a variety of uses. On the other, it had to present inimitable, eye-catching objects with a unique design and high recall value. Pursuant to the idea of “specific neutrality” and strategic key terms such as “low cost monuments” or “Ikea classicism,” Atelier Kempe Thill has continually come up with new solutions that, despite times of upheaval and increasing costs, still manage to recall the legacy of European architecture in a powerful, natural, and innovative way. Today, the office, founded in Rotterdam in 2000 by André Kempe (*1968 in Freiberg) and Oliver Thill (*1971 in Chemnitz), has about fifteen employees. This publication illuminates the architects’ distinct approach based on very personal and not always politically correct statements with respect to selected projects from the past twelve years.
