How much of mental illness is in the brain? The mind? Why does it matter? A century after his groundbreaking General Psychopathology, the work of Karl Jaspers remains relevant and timely. Then, as now, advances in neuroscience are revolutionizing psychology, resulting in a precarious balance between brain and mind. The papers in Karl Jaspers’ Philosophy and Psychopathology revisit Jaspers' ideas and methods in light of contemporary thinking and offer insights on how these may inform approaches to theoretical discourse and clinical practice. Working to bridge psychiatry and medicine, organizing a classification system for mental disorders, and rejecting dogmatic formulas in favor of respecting client experience, he emerges as a translator as well as a transmitter of clinical ideas. Through these chapters, he continues to remind his peers to never lose sight of the patient as human, and the brain--so often in danger of being reduced to the sum of its structures--as the seat of our humanity. Among the featured topics: Hermeneutical and dialectical thinking in psychiatry and the contribution of Jaspers. Brain mythologies: Jaspers’ critique of reductionism from a current perspective. Jaspers’ criticism of anthropological and phenomenological psychiatry. Jaspers' concept of delusion compared to that of the DSM. Jaspers’ concept of “limit situation”: extensions and therapeutic applications. Psychopathology and psychotherapy in Jaspers’ work and today’s perspectives on psychotherapy in psychiatry. A potent re-examination of a major thinker and of controversies that still surround a young discipline, Karl Jaspers’ Philosophy and Psychopathology is scintillating reading for professors and students in phenomenological philosophy, existential philosophy, psychopathology, psychiatry, psychotherapy, and psychology in general.

"This paper estimates the relationship between family background, school characteristics, and student achievement in primary school in two Latin American countries, Argentina and Colombia, as well as several comparison countries. The database used is the student-level international achievement data of the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), which tested the reading performance of fourth-grade students in 2001. The nationally representative samples have 3,300 students in Argentina and 5,131 students in Colombia. The emerging general pattern of results is that educational performance is strongly related to students' family background, weakly to some institutional school features, and hardly to schools' resource endowments. In an international perspective, estimated family background effects are relatively large in Argentina, and relatively small in Colombia. A specific Argentine feature is the lack of performance differences between rural and urban areas. A specific Colombian feature is the lack of significant differences between gender performance. Nonnative students and students not speaking Spanish at home have particularly weak performance in both countries. But there are no differences by parental occupation and no positive effects of kindergarten attendance. In Argentina, students perform better in schools with a centralized curriculum and ability-based class formation. "--World Bank web site.

Philosophy and psychiatry share many topics and problems. For example, the "solutions" of the psychiatry of the philosophical body-soul problem have direct effects on the self-image of the discipline. Despite these obvious overlappings, and unlike the English-speaking countries, interdisciplinary research on "philosophical psychopathology" has been scarce in Germany. The current anthology closes these gaps, because the authors - renowned experts as well as young scientists, whose new approaches open promising perspectives - come from both disciplines. The individual contributions deal with philosophical debates as they arise within the context of psychiatric theory and practice.
