Recent developments in IC technologies have facilitated the practical application of dynamic vehicle routing systems. While most of the available dynamic approaches deal with urban area environments, the focus of this thesis is set to wide area dynamic freight transportation covering the entire European continent. Due to its dynamic planning component, the occasional transportation mode – independent of predefined line networks – is considered. The author develops and evaluates two new dynamic planning approaches and incorporates all important real-life restrictions, such as regulations on driving and working hours (EC 561). Numerical tests are carried out with a five-week real-life data set from an international freight forwarder. The results indicate that significant improvements, especially in terms of empty kilometers and service quality, can be achieved.

The complexity of distribution systems is augmented by various trends: globalization of the manufacturing industry, rising customer demands, and the reverse flows within closed-loop systems. In this light, the need for ‘advanced’ planning methods that are based on quantitative optimization is constantly increasing. This book takes up the challenges posed by these developments. In doing so, it presents recent results and case studies from a group of researchers that regularly meet at the IWDL (International Workshop on Distribution Logistics). The text covers the design of distribution networks, vehicle routing, warehousing and reverse logistics. It also contains a comprehensive review of more than 60 case studies in reverse logistics.

Das Konzept der Produktionsglättung stellt für viele Unternehmen eine Möglichkeit zur Erhöhung der Produktivität von Montagestationen sowie zur Reduktion von Rohmaterialbeständen dar. Andreas Tegel entwickelt für Produktionssysteme, in denen Endproduktbestände durch Kanban gesteuert werden, approximative analytische Zusammenhänge zwischen der benötigten Anzahl an Kanban, Produktionskapazitäten und der Wartezeit von Kunden bzw. möglicher Lieferservicegrade. Außerdem werden diverse heuristische und ein exaktes Verfahren zur Erstellung geglätteter Produktionsreihenfolgen erarbeitet. Insgesamt resultieren daraus zahlreiche Hinweise zur Dimensionierung von Beständen und Kapazitäten in schlanken Produktionssystemen.

This book contains 93 selected papers from the symposium "Operations Research 2008" which was held from September 3-5, 2008 at the University of Augsburg, Germany. The international conference, which also serves as the annual meeting of the German Operations Research Society (GOR), attracted 580 participants from more than thirty countries. The general theme "Operations Research and Global Business" stresses the important role of Operations Research in improving decisions in the increasingly complex global business environment. Operations Research represents one of the most successful instruments for organizing business processes, as many applications in areas like supply chain management or financial management show. The book gives a broad overview of the various facets of Operations Research: mathematical methods such as optimization, forecasting, data analysis or game theory and their applications in business, economics and social life.
