This book presents the foundations for the future of tourism in a structured and detailed format. The who-is-who of tourism intelligence has collaborated to present a definitive blueprint for tourism reflecting the role of science, market institutions, and governance in its innovation and sustainability. The book adopts a comprehensive approach, exploring recent research and the latest developments in practice to inform the reader about instruments and actions that can shape a successful future for tourism. Broad in scope, the book incorporates the perspectives of leading tourism academics, as well as the views of tourism entrepreneurs, destination managers, government officials, and civil leaders. The book is divided into three parts, the first of which addresses the scientific facets of innovation, analyzing the challenges and opportunities that technology provides for organic and disruptive developments in tourism, which will shape its future. In turn, the second part examines socio-cultural paradigms – with a view to dismantling traditional barriers to innovation. It also explores the role of heritage and the ethics of inclusiveness as drivers for sustainable tourism. The third part investigates new ways and means in governance and policy making for tourism. It introduces advances such as strategic positioning, symbiotic partnerships, and innovative management, and closes by presenting governance frameworks for an inclusive and sustainable future of tourism.

The study of tourism and indeed the tourism industry is changing constantly. Now in its fifth edition, Contemporary Tourism: an international approach presents a new and refreshing approach to the study of tourism, looking at the far reaching effects that the COVID pandemic has had on the industry and how it has been forced to change (or not) subsequently. Considering issues such as advances in AI and its impacts, the environmental crisis and air travel, the sharing economy and Airbnb, and the tourist experience in a Covid world. In particular, it highlights the ongoing threats and opportunities faced by the tourism industry today, and discusses the related management strategies, illustrating the potential implications for the patterns and flow of tourism in the future. Divided into five sections, each chapter has a thorough learning structure including chapter objectives, examples, discussion points, self-review questions, checklists and case studies. URL links in the form of QR codes are heavily present throughout the text so that users of both hard and electronic formats can have direct links to up to date, authoritative and annotated sources of information. Cases are both thematic and destination-based and always international. New to this edition:• New material on latest issues such as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, international responses to the environmental crisis, the impact of AI/robotics on tourism human resource and the rise of the staycation; • Brand new and updated case studies and readings throughout;• Substantial support for both students and teachers, both within the text itself and via web-based student and instructor resources.

This book aims to provide a comprehensive review of the contribution of network analysis to the understanding of tourism destinations and organizations. Theoretical and methodological aspects are discussed along with a series of applications. While this is a relatively new approach in the tourism literature, in other social and natural sciences network analysis has a long tradition and has provided important insights for the knowledge of the structure and the dynamics of many complex systems. The study of network structures, both from a quantitative and qualitative point of view, can deliver a number of useful outcomes also for the analysis of tourism destinations and organizations.

Bioenergetics is a topic which impinges on a wide range of fundamental problems in biology. The movement of electrons and ions across and through membranes is important in fields such as energy transduction, cell biology, and cell signalling. The maturation of bioenergetics has led to cross-fertilization with other fields and this has led to both the necessity for scientists in other areas, such as clinical scientists, to learn the classical bioenergetic techniques, and the application of foreign techniques to bioenergetics, like molecular biology and electrophysiology. This book describes the core bioenergetic techniques required in the analysis of membrane-translocating events. Topics covered include the measurement of the main fluxes and stoichiometries, membrane transport, redox states and potentials, the isolation of bioenergetic preparations for mitochondria and mitochondrial subcomponents and chloroplast subcomponents, and the reconstitution and characterization of proteins in proteoliposomes. Both established and new techniques are fully described. The book will be a valuable guide for research scientists working in the areas of mammalian and plant biochemistry and cell biology.
