Since the famous debate between Keynes and Ohlin on German reparation payments after World War I, international transfers have attracted the attention of economists. Today the subject is of even greater importance with billions of dollars flowing between nations as unilateral transfers. However the emphasis has shifted from balance-of-payments issues to the welfare consequences following a transfer and in particular the welfare issues arising from aid to developing countries. In The Economics of International Transfers, first published in 1998, Professors Brakman and van Marrewijk present an overview of transfers (including the history of transfers and current transfer flows) and their own unified framework in which they present important and original research. Subjects considered include welfare effects, distortions, third parties, rent-seeking, the 'trade or aid' discussion, multi-lateral agencies, tied aid and imperfect competition.

How can relative price and income approaches be reconciled with balance of payments analysis? John F. Kyle argues that a model is required which explicity includes a production sector and a complete monetary sectory.The author demonstrates the inadequacy of the traditional method of extending macroeconomic models to deal with trade problems and proceeds to develop a properly specified open economy model adequate to the task. After extending the model to look at additional issues, he relates the principal results obtained in a macroeconomic setting to those produced using a Hahn-type monetary approach. The Hahn model is extended to incorporate an alternative financial asset and to allow for unemployment in the economy. His theory of the balance of payments takes into account both important monetary and aggregate demand features of macroeconomics and the relative prices and interdependencies of general equilibrium theory.Originally published in 1976.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. This volume, edited by Mohsin S. Khan, Saleh M. Nsouli, and Chorng-Huey Wong-respectively Director, Deputy Director, and Senior Advisor in the IMF Institute-compiles some of the analysis that the Institute uses in its macroeconomic training to address key questions that policymakers face in managing their national economies. The chapters, by IMF staff and external economists, cover salient topics in monetary, fiscal, and exchange rate management and show that there are no definitive prescriptions for effective economic policymaking, but rather a range of options, and that any course of policy action has explicit pros and cons.
