This book is a bold conceptual and architectural response to the contemporary city. Supplanting recent western accounts of urban developments, centred largely on European research, it introduces an emergent network of globally dispersed architects, theorists and urbanists. Working primarily, though not exclusively, out of Asia, the contributors are a globally active body that is fast developing a rapidly evolving language of urban imagination and intervention. This is a new and intriguing version of events, which is wholly in the step with the simultaneous and spontaneous nature of urban developments in Asia, as China and much of the surrounding region come alive. It features an interview with the Japanese master Kazuo Shinohara and a practice profile of pioneering Chinese architecture Yung Ho Chang.

Allereerst krijgt de lezer inzicht in de geografie van het land (landschap, klimaat, demografie ...). Daarnaast biedt het boek ook een gedetailleerde historische analyse, gaande van de prehistorie tot heden. De belangrijkste plaatsen, monumenten en figuren passeren hierbij de revue. Irak heeft een aanzienlijk agrarisch potentieel dank zij het water en de vruchtbare slibafzettingen van Tigris en Eufraat. De Iraakse economie heeft echter ook kwetsbare kanten (denk maar aan het opgelegde VN-embargo) en is sterk exportafhankelijk van de aardolie. Vervolgens staan de sociaal-culturele aspecten centraal : gewoontes en attitudes zijn in Irak gebaseerd op Arabisch-islamitische tradities en op etnische achtergronden. Daarbij komen de gastvrijheid, man-vrouw-verhouding, gastronomie, festiviteiten, tijdsindeling, kunst, taal en godsdienst aan bod. Een groot deel van het boek is gewijd aan de analyse van het toerisme. Vanaf 1960, toen het belang van toerisme wereldwijd toenam, werd ook in Irak in die branche geïnvesteerd. De twee Golfoorlogen hebben het toerisme (vooral vanuit het westen) echter gekelderd. Is er nu nog een toeristische infrastructuur aanwezig? Welk beleid voert de Iraakse overheid inzake toerisme? Bij de uitgebreide toeristische verkenning worden zowat alle attracties en plaatsen beschreven vanuit eigen ervaringen. Uiteraard krijgt de lezer ook heel wat praktische informatie (formaliteiten, gezondheid, geld, nuttige adressen).
