En étudiant les traditions diplomatiques de Rome avec ses voisins et sa politique envers les royaumes clients barbares jusqu'au IVe siècle, puis avec les chefs de ces peuples barbares qui demandent à s'intégrer, avec leurs soldats, dans la hiérarchie de l'armée romaine, cet ouvrage met en lumière une autre lecture des événements politiques et militaires du Ve siècle dans l'Occident romain, longtemps résumés par les visions catastrophistes de la chute de l'Empire romain et des grandes invasions. L'ouvrage s'intéresse tout particulièrement au devenir des Goths et parmi eux, à ceux qui vont devenir les Wisigoths du "royaume wisigothique de Toulouse puis de Tolède". L'évolution des relations des Wisigoths d'Alaric, le responsable du fameux sac de Rome en 410, et de ses successeurs avec le pouvoir romain est analysée tout au long d'une histoire de l'Italie, de la Gaule et de l'Espagne qui voit se succéder usurpations et rivalités politiques des aristocraties romaines, conquête de l'Afrique par les Vandales et volonté de contrôle de l'Empire d'Orient, intégration des contingents fédérés dans le dispositif militaire et capacité des noblesses barbares à mettre en place un nouvel ordre social et politique qui amorce, en 477, l'avènement des royaumes romano-barbares. Comment les élites romaines ont-elles affronté ces transformations radicales du monde romain tardif ? Comment les Barbares et Constantinople ont-ils conjointement mis en place le nouvel ordre du monde en Occident ? Cet ouvrage tente de répondre à ces questions en proposant une relecture politique du passage de l'Antiquité au Moyen Âge
