Abstract

After a decade of chasing stories around the globe, travel writer Stephanie Elizondo Griest followed the magnetic pull home - only to discover that her native South Texas had been transformed in her absence. In this work, she weaves seven years of stories into a meditation on the existential impact of international borderlines.

Abstract

Border Correspondent is the first major collection of the journalism of Ruben Salazar. Although there has long been a vigorous Spanish-language press in the United States, Salazar was the first journalist of Mexican American background to cross over into mainstream English-language print media with his reporting for the Los Angeles Times during the 1960's. Salazar was also the first significant foreign correspondent of Mexican descent, and in 1969 he became the first Mexican American columnist for a major newspaper. Mario Garcia's introduction to this collection provides a biographical sketch of Salazar as well as a thoughtful evaluation of his significance to American journalism and to the history of the Mexican American community in California.

Abstract

"Rooted in Gloria Anzaldúa's experience as a Chicana, a lesbian, an activist, and a writer, the essays and poems in this volume challenge how we think about identity. Borderlands/La Frontera remaps our understanding of what a "border" is, presenting it not as a simple divide between here and there, us and them, but as a psychic, social, and cultural terrain that we inhabit, and that inhabits all of us. This 20th anniversary edition features a new introduction comprised of commentaries from writers, teachers, and activists on the legacy of Gloria Anzaldúa's visionary work."--Jacket.

Abstract

"This volume focuses on whether the institutions that presently govern the U.S.-Mexico transborder space are effective in providing solutions to difficult binational problems as they manifest themselves in the borderlands. The volume addresses key binational issues and explores where there are strong levels of institutional governance development, where it is failing, how governance mechanisms have evolved over time, and what can be done to improve it to meet the needs of the U.S.-Mexico borderlands in the next decades"--
