Abstract

L'architecte britannique Sir Edwin Lutyens (1869-1944) a conçu 140 cimetières dans la campagne de Flandre et au Nord de la France pour les soldats tués durant la Première Guerre mondiale. Les cimetières peuvent être considérés comme une empreinte de l'ancien champ de bataille sur la carte de l'Europe. Tous sont conçus conformément aux principes établis à l'avance, basé sur l'idée d'une cathédrale, église ou une chapelle à l'air libre, et comprennent des pierres tombales uniformes, une pierre commémorative et la Croix du Sacrifice. Les aspects les plus mémorables sont méticuleusement positionnés dans le paysage, comme la sélection variée d'arbres et autres espaces verts et l'architecture des bâtiments d'entrée des cimetières. Les 140 cimetières sont documentés avec les références des endroits où ils se trouvent.
