This open access handbook offers a one-stop-shop for both new and established researchers, educators, policy makers and administrators in the field of open, distance and digital education (ODDE) to gain a comprehensive overview of the history, theory and practice at all levels of ODDE, and at the same time stimulates in-depth discussions on various themes and issues of ODDE for today and future. Researchers, scholars and students in the field of ODDE can use this handbook as a major reference to conduct their own research and learning agendas. To cover the field comprehensively, the handbook is structured following the 3M framework developed by one of the chief editors Zawacki-Richter. The 3M framework categorizes the major research areas and issues in ODDE on three levels. Accordingly, the handbook is divided into six sections in total, two section at each of the three levels: 1 Macro Level - ODDE Systems and Theories, 2 Meso Level - Institutional Perspectives, Management and Organization, and 3 Micro Level - Learning and Teaching in ODDE.

Disengagement of youth from schooling is an issue of significant national and international concern, and is a key driver of educational policy and reform that look to maximise school retention for the benefit of both students and the wider community. In Australia, Flexible Learning Options (FLOs) have arisen as a response to the premature disengagement from schooling of a sizeable number of Australian youth. FLOs attend to the educational, social and well-being needs of young people experiencing complex life circumstances, yet empirical evidence of their value to date has been largely anecdotal. The significance of this book lies in its innovative approach to gauging the value of FLOs—to young people themselves, as well as the wider Australian community. Drawing on past research and new findings from a national investigation, the authors provide novel insight into the pressures pushing young people out of schools and the mechanisms at work in FLOs to re-engage them in education. The varied contributions of this book elucidate many of the measurable impacts of FLOs on the life trajectories of disenfranchised youth, including improved economic integration, mental and emotional wellbeing, and myriad other outcomes. The significance of this project lies in its exploration of how young people and staff understand the transformative nature of the FLO experience, with an analysis that brings to light the wider value of this type of educational intervention in terms of long term community benefit.

Texts selected by the PAIGC (Partido Africano da Independência da Guiné e Cabo Verde / African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde). Translated by Michael Wolfers, and foreword by Carlos Lopes. Amílcar Cabral, born in 1921 in Guinea- Bissau, had his early education in Guinea and persued his university studies in Portugal. Cabral found himself active in the nationalist struggle, a political context that enabled him to reflect on several aspects of the armed struggle. He developed his understanding and theories of the national liberation struggle in the political context of militant nationalism; he fought as he wrote incisively about that struggle, and passionately struggled as he wrote. This dialectical experience enriched his theoretical understanding of the aims, goals, strategies and ideologies that informed the nature of political involvement in the movement for national liberation.

- Petra Missomelius in: MEDIENwissenschaft, 2/3/2014
