The Fortuitous Teacher: A Guide to Successful One-Shot Library Instruction discusses how librarians have become accidental teachers in the academic university setting. It covers how (if at all) librarians are prepared by MILS programs to teach, compares typical characteristics of teachers versus librarians, and presents tactics on how to learn effective teaching skills on the job. In addition, readers will learn about the history of library instruction, the different types of library instruction, and the dynamics of one-shot library instruction, classroom culture, faculty buy-in, and collaboration. Examines how MILS programs prepare librarians to teach Compares the typical characteristics of effective teachers and librarians Offers advice for new academic librarians who take on the role of classroom teacher Explores future trends in library instruction and how to apply this to one-shot instruction sessions

The design philosophies of Google and Apple represent different approaches to new product design. Google's model features bottom-up and data-driven decision-making processes, while Apple's model is to design and build products top-down. Library instruction program design may learn from these differing but complementary approaches. Inspired by Google’s and Apple’s success, Library Instruction Design details how library instruction program design may learn from the philosophy of product design in the business world. In designing library instruction, a Google-philosophy approach teaches what the user wants to know while an Apple-philosophy approach teaches what the librarian thinks the user needs to learn. These two design philosophies aim at different teaching objectives reflecting library and information science education in modern society. The book is divided into five sections, with opening sections covering library instruction, the philosophy of library instruction design and design philosophy from different angles. Later sections discuss applying Google’s model and applying Apple’s model. Offers a creative way to think about library instruction program design Suggests two design approaches grounded in two philosophies, represented by the design approaches of Google and Apple Details the differences and complementarities between top-down and bottom-up approaches to design

In order to make an impact with their customers, library staff must be well trained and up-to-date. Training is often delivered by library managers, development officers and trainers who may have limited budgets with access to few resources. This accessible guide uses case studies and examples of best practice from public, school, academic, special and government libraries to help library and information workers deliver excellent training practice. Increasingly, library and information staff are being asked to do more and more with fewer resources. In the context of higher education and further education, library and information workers are often involved in training large, diverse groups of more than 100 students, who may have limited resources. In public libraries, library staff may be involved in delivering a wide range of training activities to extremely diverse groups. Many library and information workers in special libraries deliver end-user and specialist training to busy professionals who are unlikely to have the time to attend pre-scheduled workshops. In addition, the rise of social networking tools and other information and communication technologies, has meant that training practices are continually changing to meet the expectations of participants. This book provides guidance on the design and delivery of effective training courses and is aimed at helping experienced trainers, as well as those who are still developing their skills, including: The people side of training; Use of technologies to support training practices; Different approaches to learning and teaching; Planning and designing training; Delivering training: face-to-face and blended learning; Evaluation of training events and continuous improvement; Learning and development in the workplace. The book will be essential reading for all library and information workers involved in training.

Informed Learning Applications: Insights from Research and Practice is the latest volume of rigorous research in the Advances in Librarianship series. Edited by experienced librarian Kim L. Ranger, the eight contributions to this volume describe various practices using and extending Christine Bruce's informed learning theory from a range of educational spaces, from schools to universities. Chen and Chen address integrated information literacy instruction in Taiwanese elementary schools by joining the Big6 model, inquiry-based learning, and Bruce's Six Frames. Woods and Cummins apply universal design in teaching first-year university students about the research process within the discipline of documentary filmmaking using library guides. Tucker blends informed learning with Meyer and Land's threshold concepts to redesign master's courses and uses information experience to assess students' transformed learning experiences and relationships with information. Leek and Brown train university speech center peer tutors and recommend revising public speaking communication curricula. Ranger creates a model of relational liaising by applying Bakhtinian leadership principles to academic librarianship and gives examples that combine informed learning and scholarly communication. Fundator and Maybee transform the role of librarians in higher education to "informed learning developers." Cunningham uses blended models that represents stakeholders' information literacy conceptions and perceptions of their information context to promote learning in an international school community. Whitworth and Webster observe postgraduate students as they negotiate power and authority through resistance in their online communication practices. Informed Learning Applications focuses on integrating approaches to learning, featuring librarian praxis and collaboration with disciplinary instructors. It is the ideal read for academic librarians and researchers looking to explore how to facilitate learning.
