Created to teach students many of the most important techniques used for constructing combinatorial designs, this is an ideal textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in Combinatorial Design Theory. The text features clear explanations of basic designs such as Steiner and Kirkman triple systems, mutually orthogonal Latin squares, finite projective and affine planes, and Steiner quadruple systems. In these settings, the student will master various construction techniques, both classic and modern, and will be well prepared to construct a vast array of combinatorial designs.Design Theory offers a progressive approach to the subject, with carefully ordered results. It begins with simple constructions that gradually increase in complexity. Each design has a construction that contains new ideas, or that reinforces and builds upon similar ideas previously introduced. The many illustrations aid in understanding and enjoying the application of the constructions described. Written by professors with the needs of students in mind, this is destined to become the standard textbook for design theory.

By restricting to Gaussian distributions, the optimal Bayesian filtering problem can be transformed into an algebraically simple form, which allows for computationally efficient algorithms. Three problem settings are discussed in this thesis: (1) filtering with Gaussians only, (2) Gaussian mixture filtering for strong nonlinearities, (3) Gaussian process filtering for purely data-driven scenarios. For each setting, efficient algorithms are derived and applied to real-world problems.

In today’s surveillance systems, a multitude of sensors are used. Thus, the data volume is clearly increasing and the human decision maker has to be supported in analyzing this data in an intelligent way. This contribution deals with the process of situation assessment, which is analyzing real-time data with respect to pre-modeled situations of interest with a dynamic Bayesian network. The quality of the recognition is evaluated with a maritime dataset.

A concept for time-related forecasts of lane change maneuvers in highway scenarios is presented within the present work. Automated driving systems rely on understanding the driving environment to fulfill their driving task transparently and safely. This involves the perception of the driving environment as well as its interpretation to detect and predict driving maneuvers of road users.

Symmetric designs are an important class of combinatorial structures which arose first in the statistics and are now especially important in the study of finite geometries. This book presents some of the algebraic techniques that have been brought to bear on the question of existence, construction and symmetry of symmetric designs - including methods inspired by the algebraic theory of coding and by the representation theory of finite groups - and includes many results. Rich in examples and containing over 100 problems, the text also provides an introduction to many of the modern algebraic approaches used, through six lengthy appendices and supplementary problems. The book will be of interest to both combinatorialists and algebraists, and could be used as a course text for a graduate course.

This work furthers the overall understanding of a 3w-measurement, by considering previously unexamined macroscopic influence factors within measurement by Finite Element simulations (FES). Moreover, new measuring configurations are developed to determine (an)isotropic thermal conductivities of nanoscale samples. Since no analytic solutions are available for these configurations, a new evaluation methodology is presented to determine emergent thermal conductivities by FES and Neural Networks.
