Abstract

Knowledge of the structure and function of the complex and interwoven network of nerves is inexhaustible and has not been fully determined. The physiological basis of many neuropathic symptoms continues to pursue experts in this field, and in many of the pathological changes related to neuropathies. In the last few decades, there has been increasing interest in new tools applied to diseases involving nerves of the nervous system, which have changed this state of affairs. Microscopic studies, new quantitative histometric methods, and refined physiologic techniques have already expanded our knowledge of structure and function of nerves and rapidly advancing techniques in the fields of immunology and molecular genetics to clarify entire categories of polyneuropathy. Although polyneuropathy is among the most challenging categories of neurological diseases, effective forms of treatment for polyneuropathy have been introduced during the last few decades. This book intends to provide the reader with a broad overview of polyneuropathy, featuring considerations and diagnostic approaches to patients, specific neuropathic syndromes and new related entities, pathogenic mechanisms, and pathological reactions brought to bear to the therapeutic and new clinical applications. All this is important evidence to support present and future directions in this challenging topic.

Abstract

This book presents up-to-date information on clinical and research applications of imaging in peripheral arterial disease (PAD). It provides high-quality images useful not only in the diagnosis of PAD but also for use in clinical trials aimed at the development of novel therapies such as angiogenic agents and stem cells. The book begins with coverage of the applications of the four major imaging modalities in a clinical setting: ultrasound, computed tomography angiography (CTA), magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), and digital subtraction angiography (DSA). It also discusses the ankle brachial index (ABI) as a screening technique to establish the presence of PAD. Subsequent chapters focus on the advantages and limitations of various research applications of imaging in PAD including contrast ultrasound for measuring perfusion; MRI for assessing perfusion, energetics, plaque volume, and characteristics; and radionuclide imaging for perfusion and inflammation. Imaging in Peripheral Arterial Disease: Clinical and Research Applications is an essential resource for physicians, researchers, residents, and fellows in cardiology, radiology, imaging, nuclear medicine, diagnostic radiology, and vascular surgery.

Abstract

Vascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide. Distinguished clinical and surgical approaches have attempted to overcome its morbidity and mortality; still 17.9 million people die every year due to vascular affections. Stem cell therapy has emerged as a promising therapeutic strategy. Stem cells synthesize and secrete cytokines that promote cell recruitment, immunomodulation, extracellular matrix remodeling, angiogenesis, and neuroregeneration, all of which promote regeneration. Besides that, stem cells are also capable of differentiating in various cell types, being employed in tissue engineering. Preclinical and clinical investigations have reported efficacy of stem cell therapy for various vascular diseases. Even though results are encouraging, the studies demonstrate variation in stem cell type and origin, route and protocol for administration, and concomitant use of other treatment strategies, impairing easy interpretation of results and clinical application. The purpose of this book is to compile and comprise the current state of the evidence regarding stem cell therapy for each vascular disease, elucidating possible clinical applications. More than an objective guide for readers on the use of this novel treatment strategy, this publication will advocate for stem cell therapy use and development and will be of significant interest to physicians in a wide range of disciplines as well as researchers.
