"In this new biography of Gypsy Rose Lee, Noralee Frankel draws on archival sources to strip bare the myths created by Gypsy herself and to tell the real story. Although Lee published an autobiography that has sold steadily, this will be the first biography of her. Frankel combines politics with twentieth century popular culture"--Provided by publisher.

The interest in Romani, the language of the Roma or ""Gypsies"", has grown considerably in recent years. Romani has drawn attention from a.o. grammarians, sociolinguists, Indologists, language contact researchers, language planners, educators, typologists and historical linguists. This Indic language is spoken by between five and ten million people world-wide. The bibliography also covers two other Indic languages spoken by peripatetic groups, Dom or Domari from the Middle East, and Lomavren or Bosha of Eastern Turkey and Armenia.

A language of Indic origin heavily infuenced by European idioms for many centuries now, Romani provides an interesting experimental field for students of language contact, linguistic minorities, standardization, and typology. Contributions to this collection focus on the unity and diversity of the language of the Roma (Gypsies), the only Indic language spoken exclusively in Europe. Properties discussed include the distinct inflectional and derivational patterns applied to Asian and European lexical layers, the distribution of inflectional, agglutinative, and analytic formation among syntactic categories, regularities in the ongoing shift from inflectional to analytic case formation, suppletion, aspects of syntactic convergence, and patterns of morphological transitivization and de-transitivization.

Romani is one of Britain's oldest and most established minority languages. Brought to the country by Romani immigrants from continental Europe in the sixteenth century or even earlier, it was spoken in its old, inflected form as a family and community language until the second half of the nineteenth century, when it yielded to English. But even after its decline as the everyday language of English and Welsh Gypsies, Romani continues to survive in the form of a vocabulary that is used to express an 'emotive mode' of communication among group members. This book examines British Romani in its historical context and in its present-day form, drawing on recordings and interviews with speakers. It documents the Romani vocabulary and its usage patterns in conversation, offering insight into the processes of language death and language revitalization. The volume includes an extensive lexicon of Angloromani as a helpful reference.

This is the first typologically-oriented collection on Romani that is devoted to a particular thematic domain - that of noun phrase grammar. The approach taken is unique in that it places this typologically hybrid language in the centre of a general linguistic, universal discussion of the relevant noun phrase phenomena. The book is also the first assembly of articles to deal with Romani as a whole on the basis of cross-dialectal samples, offering areal-typological, dialectological, and historicalinterpretations. The individual contributions discuss morphological and syntactic aspects of nominal and pronominal inflection, definite articles, demonstratives, genitive compounding, external possession, pronominal object doubling and morphosyntactic alignment. Contributors include leading experts in the fields of noun phrase grammar, Romani dialectologists, typologists and historical linguists.
