Entre l'oeuvre de Montaigne et celle de Descartes, la poésie spirituelle française cède l’initiative au «je». Au carrefour d’une poétique historique et de l’éthique, l’étude scrute les paradoxes du «je», locuteur non souverain et non autonome, sur le modèle de saint Paul («Je vis non point maintenant moi, mais Christ vit en moi») et de saint Augustin (Dieu étant «plus intime à moi que moi-même»). Avant l’invention du «moi», les poèmes élaborent un rapport pratique à soi. Par le travail maniériste des signes verbaux et des modèles (poèmes d’amour, psaumes, apocryphes augustiniens, traités moraux et spirituels), celui qui dit «je» est modulé comme personne morale et théologique, ainsi que sujet de droit, sujet politique voire dissident. Cette étude d’un moment de la poésie lyrique avant le lyrisme parcourt des poèmes reconnus, de Sponde, Desportes, Chassignet, ou plus méconnus, de Mage de Fiefmelin, de Croix, Hopil, et autres, soit environ cent cinquante recueils publiés entre 1580 et 1641.
