Abstract

"As the first collection of studies to explore the use of edutainment within festival experiences, this book extends current knowledge and understanding of festival experiences. Relying on a series of international case studies, this book offers readers unique and important insights that emphasise the benefit of edutainment activities for enhanced audience learning, engagement, and festival satisfaction. This book is valuable for scholars, festival organisers, policy makers and students interested in or studying festivals, events, edutainment and/or experience design. Other tourism industry scholars, professionals and students of, for example, visitor attractions, museums, theatre and hospitality services, may also find this book of value considering their established use of edutainment within their sectors"--

Abstract

"In Truth-Spots, Gieryn gives readers an elegant, rigorous rendering of the provenance of ideas, uncovering the geographic location where they are found or made, a spot built up with material stuff and endowed with cultural meaning and value. These kinds of places--including botanical gardens, naturalists' field-sites, Henry Ford's open-air historical museum, and churches and chapels along the pilgrimage way to Santiago de Compostela in Spain--would seem at first to have little in common. But each is a truth-spot, a place that makes people believe. Truth may well be the daughter of time, Gieryn argues, but it is also the son of place." -- Dust jacket.

Abstract

As geography has become influenced by such themes such as postcolonial studies, feminism and psychoanalysis, so students have been forced to engage with ideas and concepts from outside the traditional boundaries of their subject. This exciting new work provides them with an invaluable aid to understanding the complexities and subtleties of these new ideas. The editors present some thirty essays--written by a wide range of leading practitioners--exploring the key concepts in cultural geography. The essays range from questions that have recently emerged to more established ideas that warrant critical examination. The work will be invaluable to students of cultural geography and related disciplines.

Abstract

"In the Lublin Region, the key word is the border: we are right next to Belarus and Ukraine, between the Vistula and the Bug. The diversity of this area (manifested by Orthodox churches and synagogues as well as Armenian and Tatar traces) finds its reflection in the multiplicity of topics considered in the volume. The authors and editors of the volume (comprising ethnologists, anthropologists, philologists, geographers and economists) treat cultural area studies presented as a vehicle allowing the reader to imagine the space of the Lublin Region, where the West meets the East. Analysing the Region's historical and cultural resources, the authors drew a broken circle, going from Biała Podlaska, through Włodawa, Hrubieszów, Zamość, Zwierzyniec, Biłgoraj, Janów Lubelski, Kraśnik, Opole Lubelskie, Kazimierz Dolny, Puławy to Łuków. These margins of the Lublin Region have become for them, to use bell hooks's formulation, a place of radical opening" (from the introduction).
