"The legendary fourth CIAM congress took place aboard a ship on the Mediterranean Sea in 1933. Led by Le Corbusier, Cornelis van Eesteren and Sigfried Giedion and themed 'The Functional City', it is considered to be a pinnacle of urbanism. Participants analysed 34 cities on the basis of maps specially produced for the congress, and the results were shown at an exhibition in Amsterdam's Stedelijk Museum in 1935. Plans for a publication were interrupted by the war, and the material has until now remained unpublished. This book examines the emergence and evolution of the discipline of urban design as articulated through the work of Josep Lluis Sert (1902-1983), one of its most influential practitioners. Sert was noted for his city planning and urban development projects in Europe, South America, and the United States, and the master plans of his later career were significant for their integration of natural landscape features into the urban building scheme. Today, under the pressure of climate change and ecological catastrophe, environmentalism has become a key driver to rethink the architectural discipline. The publication 'Habitat: Ecology Thinking in Architecture' aims to highlight some of the historical sources of ecological approaches that are currently reshaping the architectural field. The book will point out the paradigmatic shift in thinking about the built environment as something inherently contextual and relational.
