The idea that there was a time when men and women lived in perfect harmony with nature and with themselves, though rooted in classical antiquity, was one of the most fertile products of the Renaissance literary and artistic imagination. This book explores one specific aspect of this idea: the musical representation and stylization of the myth of Arcadia in sixteenth-century Italy. Giuseppe Gerbino outlines how Renaissance culture strove to keep this utopia alive and demonstrates how music played a fundamental role in the construction and preservation of this collective illusion. Covering a range of different musical genres, including the madrigal, music for theater, and early opera, the book overcomes traditional barriers among genres. Illustrative music examples, including previously unpublished music, serve to expand the reader's knowledge of this important repertory, and provide new insights into the role of music in the preservation of cultural myths.

La naissance et la disparition du roman pastoral en Europe interviennent dans une période assez brève, entre le milieu du XVI et le premier tiers du XVII siècle. Comment expliquer la rapidité de ce déclin ? Quelle modification du statut de l'Arcadie entraîne la métamorphose paradoxale du berger en héros de roman ? Cet ouvrage étudie comment le séjour des bergers en Arcadie, allégorie d'une initiation poétique, devient l'emblème du mensonge romanesque. Le roman pastoral héroïque apparaît alors comme le lieu de contradictions fondatrices du roman «moderne», dans la mesure où il permet la mise en question des valeurs héroïques. L'expérience de la précarité de l'univers de l'idylle, perpétuellement envahie, dévastée ou perdue, entraîne une interrogation nouvelle des relations des individus à l'Histoire. Dans cette évolution se jouent aussi les rapports entre Arcadie et Utopie. Une incursion dans la deuxième moitié du dix-huitième siècle, lieu d'une ultime et éphémère résurgence du roman pastoral, contribue à les mettre en lumière.
