Abstract

Abstract

Japan held a profound fascination for Western artists in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The influence of Japanese art is a phenomenon that is now called 'Japonisme', and it spread widely throughout Western art. Artists introduced Japanese objects and details from Japanese art into their work. They assimilated elements of Japanese art and from these they formed their own style: it was an immense source of inspiration for European artists such as Claude Monet. This book explores Japanese influences on British Art and focus on four artists working in Britain: the American James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), the Australian Mortimer Menpes (1855-1938), and two artists from the group known as the Glasgow Boys, George Henry (1858-1934) and Edward Atkinson Hornel (1864-1933). Whistler was one of the earliest figures to incorporate Japanese elements into his art, but he never visited Japan. Menpes visited the country and learned Japanese artistic methods from a Japanese artist, whilst Henry and Hornel visited Japan and responded to Japanese photography mass-produced for foreign market. Just at the time Europe started to find inspiration in Japanese art, European civilization surged into Japan. The opening of Japan was a process of major political, economic and social change that took place rapidly after the arrival of Commodore Perry in 1854. Learning Western art was considered part of the modernization of Japan, which eventually lead to the establishment of new genre, 'Yoga'. Ono examines this symmetry in this timely volume, to be published in the centenary year of Whistler's death.

Abstract

"Despite his importance to understanding the history of early 19th century medicine, science and Protestant identity, Andrew Fernando Holmes has never been the subject of a comprehensive study. This study is based on a wide-ranging examination of primary sources, both manuscript and printed, (some of which were unknown to previous historians) that illuminate key aspects of Holmes' public life: as a student at Edinburgh in the late 1810s, as a young physician and surgeon in private and hospital practice, as a assiduous collector of botanical and mineralogical specimens and mainstay of the Natural History Society of Montreal, as one of the founding members and first Dean of the McGill medical faculty; and as a leader in the Montreal Protestant community. This study is situated at the intersection of religious, scientific and medical history. While providing an analysis of his role in the early formation of McGill's medical faculty, it seeks to move beyond a narrow institutional focus to address questions about how Holmes thought about and actually practiced medicine and surgery; how he engaged in public medical controversies, and how his religious beliefs intersected with his scientific and medical work."--

Abstract

Artists' houses and their gardens formed a distinct and influential strand in Victorian architecture and decoration, eliciting public interest and coverage in the popular press of the day. The artist's home and its contents were essential components of the Aesthetic Movement, in which artists - as home-owners, interior designers, producers and consumers - drove the movement into the mainstream. Artists such as Frederic Leighton, G.F. Watts, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones were the product of the phenomenon of the Victorian art world which brought fame and public adulation to its most successful exponents. "Artistic Circles" takes the unique approach of examining Aestheticism from a social perspective and reveals how the art movement influenced the development of domestic building and homemaking for an emerging section of Victorian society, the educated middle-class professional.
