During the first half of the twentieth century, the industrialization of Sweden was completed. A substantial proportion of the population resided in cities. What did the life courses of these people actually look like? In this book, four researchers have studied a random sample of men and women in Gothenburg, tracing their movements through the various phases of life, and between residences, working places and occupations. It is an account of important events in the lives of ordinary people during a period when much of the modern society was formed.

This dissertation by Tobias Lasse Karlsson explores the vocational identity formation of students in Municipal Adult Education (MAE) in Sweden. Through interviews with adult students at various stages of their Vocational Education and Training (VET), the study examines how vocational identities are developed. The work utilizes the concepts of identity, communities of practice, and vocational habitus to analyze both social practices and individual student experiences. The findings suggest that VET can enhance students' self-perception as adults and active societal members. However, students face barriers related to their self-perception, education, and vocation, which they must navigate to progress in their vocational identity formation. The study also highlights the complexity of vocational learning and the risk of attributing student challenges solely to vocational issues without considering structural challenges.
