This is the second monograph published by Karnac Books on behalf of the Brent Adolescent Centre/Centre for Research into Adolescent Breakdown. Drawing on the Centre's unique pool of expertise in the field, this book contains papers giving up-to-date psychodynamic perspectives on adolescent breakdown by leading clinical experts. These cover a range of topics, such as the differing developments in male and female adolescents, and the particular problems of psychotherapeutic intervention with them. Nowadays, important challenges are posed to psychiatry and psychology. These are in the domain of neurosciences, since the neurobiological correlates of the symptoms and psychiatric disorders are far from what was intended, but also of clinical order because of a progressive increase of the diagnostic categories in the diagnostic manuals, or therapeutical, ethical, social and legal ones. Laypeople think of wake, sleep and dreaming as distinct states of the mind/brain but “in-between”, hybrid states are recognized. For example, day-dreaming or, more scientifically, the default network occurs during wake. Equally, during sleep, lucid dreaming in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep presents as another hybrid state. But hybrid states are usually temporary. This book explores the possibility of an enduring hybrid wake-sleep-dream state, proposing that such a state may engender both creativity and psychopathologies. REM sleep is hyper-associative. Creativity depends on making remote associations. If REM sleep and dreaming begin to suffuse the wake state, enhanced creativity may result. But moderate to severe interpenetration of wake, sleep and dreaming may engender psychopathologies – as the functions of wake, sleep and dreaming are partially eroded.
