The first two volumes in this series published twenty years ago contained chapters devoted to anharmonic properties of solids, ab initio calculations of phonons in metals and insulators, and surface phonons. In the intervening years each of these important areas of lattice dynamics has undergone significant developments. This volume is therefore concerned with reviewing the current status of these areas. Chapter one deals with the path-integral quantum Monte-Carlo method as a numerical simulation approach and looks at how this has been applied successfully to the determination of low

This book focuses on the theory of phonon interactions in nanoscale structures with particular emphasis on modern electronic and optoelectronic devices. The continuing progress in the fabrication of semiconductor nanostructures with lower dimensional features has led to devices with enhanced functionality and even novel devices with new operating principles. The critical role of phonon effects in such semiconductor devices is well known. There is therefore a great need for a greater awareness and understanding of confined phonon effects. A key goal of this book is to describe tractable models of confined phonons and how these are applied to calculations of basic properties and phenomena of semiconductor heterostructures. The level of presentation is appropriate for undergraduate and graduate students in physics and engineering with some background in quantum mechanics and solid state physics or devices. A basic understanding of electromagnetism and classical acoustics is assumed.

This volume contains almost all of the 79 papers presented at the Fourth International Conference on Vibrations at Surfaces. The proceedings reflect the significant advances that have been made in the field of surface vibrations since the previous conference on the topic held in 1982. The presented papers showed a tendency of development in new directions, particularly in relation to dynamical effects occurring in atom and molecule-surface interactions. These proceedings cover the field of surface vibrational spectroscopy in such a way as to make the book an asset to those involved in both ex

This book contains thirty-six short papers on recent progress in a variety of subjects in mathematical and theoretical physics, written for the proceedings of a symposium in honor of the seventieth birthday of Professor F Y Wu, held at the Nankai Institute of Mathematics, October 7-11, 2001. The collection of papers is aimed at researchers, including graduate students, with an interdisciplinary interest and gives a brief introduction to many of the topics of current interest. These include new results on exactly solvable models in statistical mechanics, integrable through the Yang-Baxter equat

This book provides a comprehensive treatment of the two fundamental aspects of a solid that determine its physical properties: lattice structure and atomic vibrations (phonons). The elements of group theory are extensively developed and used as a tool to show how the symmetry of a solid and the vibrations of the atoms in the solid lead to the physical properties of the material. The uses of different types of spectroscopy techniques that elucidate the lattice structure of a solid and the normal vibrational modes of the atoms in the solid are described. The interaction of light with solids (opt
