Niet-westerse kunst krijgt nog altijd minder kansen in het officiële kunstcircuit. Wie daar verandering in wil brengen, raakt onvermijdelijk in discussie over kwaliteits- en beoordelingscriteria. Over dit onderwerp werden in deze publicatie enkele essays gebundeld. Filmcriticus Hans Beerekamp stelt zich in zijn essay de vraag hoe een filmrecensent films uit een hem onbekende culturele traditie kan beoordelen in een krantenartikel. Oscar Van De Pluijm, beleidsmedewerker van de Rotterdamse Kunststichting, schrijft "Wereldmuziek bestaat niet". Laurien Saraber onderzoekt de toepasbaarheid van subsidiecriteria op niet-westerse dans en fusievormen. Zij is onafhankelijk adviseur op gebied van diversiteit in de kunsten. Shervin Nekuee, socioloog en publicist, en Bart Top, journalist, zoeken naar de verhouding tussen kwaliteit en diversiteit in de kunsten.

In The Art of the City Raffaele Milani reflects on the ways in which inhabitants of the cityscape have interacted on a spiritual, psychological, and philosophical level with the architecture that surrounds them. Working with the premise that the city has a “soul,” which is externalized in the physical structures of its urban space, Milani expresses alarm in the face of sprawling megacities that typify the postmodern age and endanger the survival of cities’ distinctiveness. While he laments that the nature surrounding cities is disappearing under concrete, his concern is counterbalanced by the realization that there are ongoing projects of urban reclamation, renewal, and reutilization aimed at preserving an ancient, almost mystical rapport between the citizen and the lived space. Milani illustrates his argument by citing the works of modern architects including Emilio Ambasz, Massimiliano Fuksas, Frank Gehry, Rem Koolhaas, Kisho Kurokawa, Daniel Libeskind, and Renzo Piano. Rather than a history of architecture, The Art of the City is a compelling and timely reflection on the important challenge of insuring the continued liveability and aesthetic valorization of public spaces.

Par quelles opérations un édifice ou un objet se trouve-t-il intégré au corpus du patrimoine ? Quelles sont les étapes de la "chaîne patrimoniale", depuis le premier regard jusqu'à l'éventuelle obtention du statut juridique de "monument historique" ? Quels sont les critères mis en oeuvre par les chercheurs de l'Inventaire pour décider que tel château, telle ferme, tel tableau d'église possède ou non une valeur patrimoniale ? Quels émotions animent les mobilisations des profanes en faveur des biens à préserver ? Et finalement, sur quelles valeurs fondamentales repose la notion même de patrimoine ? Telles sont les questions auxquelles répond de livre, à partir d'enquêtes au plus près du terrain. Car c'est dans le détail des procédures, des propos enregistrés, des scènes et des gestes observés que l'on peut réellement comprendre comment - c'est-à-dire pourquoi - les limites du patrimoine n'ont cessé, en une génération, de s'étendre, englobant désormais non seulement la "cathédrale" mais aussi la "petite cuillère" - selon les mots d'André Chastel définissant le service de l'Inventaire -, voire, tout récemment, la borne Michelin. Appliquant à la question patrimoniale les méthodes de la sociologie pragmatique, cette étude s'inscrit dans la perspective d'une sociologie des valeurs, tentant d'élucider ce qu'on entend aujourd'hui dans notre société par l'ancienneté, l'authenticité, la singularité ou la beauté - et ce qu'on en attend.
