How are you going to make sure that your graduation represents you and everything that you are capable of, instead of what all students in your program can do? The only way to do this is to make your thesis entirely your project. And, the only way to do that is to continuously take initiative, stay active, and, most importantly, stay in charge of your work. This book will challenge you and your current perspective on your upcoming graduation project. In seven chapters, the book's authors offer their views, ideas, and practical tips of what it means to be in charge of one's own graduation, how

Methods of kernel estimates represent one of the most effective nonparametric smoothing techniques. These methods are simple to understand and they possess very good statistical properties. This book provides a concise and comprehensive overview of statistical theory and in addition, emphasis is given to the implementation of presented methods in Matlab. All created programs are included in a special toolbox which is an integral part of the book. This toolbox contains many Matlab scripts useful for kernel smoothing of density, cumulative distribution function, regression function, hazard funct

In this concise, evidence-based guide for educational leaders, the authors argue that two-year colleges can increase their rates of student success by discarding the traditional "cafeteria-style" model of course offerings and instead provide students with a "guided pathways" model in which more educationally coherent programs simplify students' choices without limiting their options and enable students to advance to further education and the labor market more quickly and at less cost.

We introduce Jan Hus through his Latin texts primarily as a polemicist and as a university teacher in this book. From the polemical writings, we chose his address against the Englishman John Stokes and also three treatises against the sale of indulgences. University activities of Master Jan are represented by several graduation speeches; here we chose those not yet translated into Czech. They are interesting not only for depicting the personality of the Czech reformer in a different way than we usually view him but also for their fresh language and style. In addition to the two topics revealed in the title of book, two other texts were selected as well. These are the texts of theological kind which however had a very topical dimension back then: the preaching 'Go ye also into the vineyard' and the discourse 'On three doubts'. All texts included (with just one minor exception) are translated into Czech for the first time.

The data report presents the structural development of educational science and is commissioned every four years by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Erziehungswissenschaft (DGfE). The publication aims to inform the field-specialized public, education and higher education politics as well as the public about current developments in educational science as one of the largest fields at German universities. Particular attention is paid to study programs, students, degrees, human resources, research achievements and the promotion of young talents. The data report provides basic information on how educational science develops under the influence of recent changes and identifies the need for action in terms of the political field as well as higher education and education policy. Relevant information in the data report - for example on students, degrees and academic careers - is differentiated by gender. The DGfE thus fulfills its own claim to support gender equality. The data report is of particular importance for current discussions about securing training capacities for professional pedagogical professions and about academic careers. In this refreshing and original exploration, George Dennis O'Brien looks at higher education in America. O'Brien argues that to debate intelligently the future of education we must stop focusing on its ideals and look instead at its institutions. He does this by addressing nine half-truths, such as whether "low cost public education benefits the least advantaged in society," and goes on to examine how accurately they reflect the true state of higher education. The result is a thought-provoking discussion of the present challenges and future prospects of American higher education. "O'Brien's historical overview of the transition from 19th-century denominational colleges to 20th-century research-driven and largely secular ones is provocative. Cleverly written and well-focused, the book addresses the financial pressures facing higher education and asks vital questions about cutbacks and curricula."-Publishers Weekly "Lively, engaging, and richly suggestive." -Francis Oakley, Commonweal "O'Brien employs calm, powerful reason, without sensationalism. His perspective is illuminating. . . . All the Essential Half-Truths About Higher Education is one of the wisest and most useful treatments of American higher education." -John Attarian, Detroit News

Beginning in the early 2000s, there was an upsurge of national concern over the state of the science and engineering job market that sparked a plethora of studies, commission reports, and a presidential initiative, all stressing the importance of maintaining American competitiveness in these fields. Science and Engineering Careers in the United States is the first major academic study to probe the issues that underlie these concerns. This volume provides new information on the economics of the postgraduate science and engineering job market, addressing su

Balancing the development of autonomy with that of social interdependence is a crucial aim of education in any society, but nowhere has it been more hotly debated than in Japan, where controversial education reforms over the past twenty years have attempted to reconcile the two goals. In this book, Peter Cave explores these reforms as they have played out at the junior high level, the most intense pressure point in the Japanese system, a time when students prepare for the high school entrance exams that will largely determine their educational trajectories and future livelihoods. Cave examines the implementation of "relaxed education" reforms that attempted to promote individual autonomy and free thinking in Japanese classrooms. As he shows, however, these policies were eventually transformed by educators and school administrators into curricula and approaches that actually promoted social integration over individuality, an effect opposite to the reforms' intended purpose. With vivid detail, he offers the voices of teachers, students, and parents to show what happens when national education policies run up against long-held beliefs and practices, and what their complex and conflicted interactions say about the production of self and community in education. The result is a fascinating analysis of a turbulent era in Japanese education that offers lessons for educational practitioners in any country.

Nonparametric function estimation with stochastic data, otherwise known as smoothing, has been studied by several generations of statisticians. Assisted by the ample computing power in today's servers, desktops, and laptops, smoothing methods have been finding their ways into everyday data analysis by practitioners. While scores of methods have proved successful for univariate smoothing, ones practical in multivariate settings number far less. Smoothing spline ANOVA models are a versatile family of smoothing methods derived through roughness penalties, that are suitable for both univariate and multivariate problems. In this book, the author presents a treatise on penalty smoothing under a unified framework. Methods are developed for (i) regression with Gaussian and non-Gaussian responses as well as with censored lifetime data; (ii) density and conditional density estimation under a variety of sampling schemes; and (iii) hazard rate estimation with censored life time data and covariates. The unifying themes are the general penalized likelihood method and the construction of multivariate models with built-in ANOVA decompositions. Extensive discussions are devoted to model construction, smoothing parameter selection, computation, and asymptotic convergence.
