Abstract

The wide-ranging and largely ignored operations around Petersburg, Virginia, were the longest and most extensive of the entire Civil War. The fighting began in June of 1864, when advance elements from the Union Army of the Potomac crossed the James River and botched a series of attacks against a thinlydefended city. The fighting ended nine long months later in the first days of April of 1865. The Five Forks Campaign and the Fall of Petersburg, March 29 - April 2, 1865, includes the final major operation that turned Lee's right flank, cut his final railroad lifeline, and resulted in the loss of

Abstract

In the hills of north central West Virginia, there lives a cast of characters who face all manner of problems. From the people who are incarcerated in West Virginia's prisons, to a woman who is learning how to lose her sight with grace, to another who sorely regrets selling her land to a fracking company, Jaws of Life portrays the diverse concerns the people of this region face every day--poverty, mental illness, drug abuse, the loss of coal mines, and the rise of new extractive industries that exert their own toll. While these larger concerns exist on the edges of their realities, these characters must still deal with quotidian difficulties: how to coexist with ex-spouses, how to care for sick family members, and how to live with friends who always seem to have more.

Abstract

"This volume presents a fresh interpretation of Virginia's history based on the author's more than four decades of researching and writing about all aspects of the subject. It incorporates new insights from scholarship on Virginia's Indians and women, slavery, religion, economic history, and social, cultural, demographic, and even climate changes. With illustrations and maps to augment the narrative, Virginians and Their Histories will allow readers for the first time to trace major themes in Virginia's long history through the words and eyes of people who experienced that history as well as made it. To write about Virginians as a whole, as some historians formerly did, excludes large portions of the population from consideration. Different groups of Virginians experienced their shared history in different ways. To state that Virginians believed something or experienced an event in a certain way is almost certainly to generalize inaccurately from one group to the whole. It is extremely difficult and almost always misleading to refer to Virginians as an undifferentiated population without regard to race, gender, or differences in wealth, social status, and geographic location"--

Abstract

"Examining the relationship between middle- and planter-class white women who supported the Confederacy, this book demonstrates that elite and middle-class white Southern women--active at home and abroad--played an integral role in the construction of Confederate nationalism as both actors and symbols, and it traces the impact of and the memories surrounding these women's wartime activism into the twentieth century."--

Abstract

"Statute Law in Colonial Virginia: Governors, Assemblymen, and the Revisals that Forged the Old Dominion is an examination of the seven times Virginia's General Assembly revised the colony's statutes between 1632 and 1748. These revisals are a way to gauge how governors, councillors, and burgesses created a hybrid body of colonial statute law that would become the longest strand in the American legal fabric. His study provides insight into the colonial legislative process, the Assembly's statutory craftsmanship, and the ways in which assemblymen continually used their unbridled discretion to cement the position of elite colonists. There are also biographical sketches of colonial Virginia's leading politicians to provide context for the legislative processes"--
